Cobra Fly-Z+ Driver Review

J.Holmgren

Recommended Posts

I've been playing my Fly-z+ driver for almost 3 weeks now. Today was the day when I finally got the last parts fit for myself, the loft and the weight.

I am shocked about how well this driver performs for me!

I am hitting my drives on average 270 meters (295 yards), this is like nothing I have ever tried before and I have tried ALL drivers from the big brands of 2015 with decent shaft options that fits me.

The numbers I get in Trackman are just out of this world, both inside and outside testing using the Nike RZN Black ball.

I can hit my "soft" drivers with an average of 105mph SS up to 300 yards and if I go with what I call my "I want to win the longest drive challenge swing" I hit the ball on average 312 yards with a SS at 109 and a attack angle at +2.

What's really shocking to me is how well this driver performs when striking down on the ball, a negative attack of 4* has made all the other drivers I tested spin in the range of 2500-3000rpm, this makes me lose distance both in carry and total. Not to mention how much straighter I hit the ball with the Fly-z+.

Also worth mentioning is that hitting the ball on heel or toe often results in smash factor values over 1.45 which is uncommon, so it's not hard to hit by any means.

Sorry if this got a bit messy (English is not my native language either) , leave some feedback since this is my first thread on this forum. Also if anyone wants to ask any question regarding the driver, the shaft or any Trackman values I will happily answer them. I can provide even more info if someone is interested.

So this is my current setup:

9*

13g weight (forward)

Graphite design AD-DI 6X 1/2" tipped

Swing average:

-3 attack angle

105 mph Swing speed

+7 Swing path

+4 Face angle

9* Dynamic loft

Ball average:

160 mph Ball Speed

8.4* launch

2450 rpm Spin (includes side spin)

26 meters peak hight

160mph ball speed from 105 mph is pretty incredible. That's a smash factor over 1.52 which is very high but hey if you're hitting it 300 yards whether it's 105 or 109mph that's awesome. This driver is getting lots of rave reviews and perhaps up for a personal test of my own. I've always liked Cobra drivers.
i have an average swing speed of 107-109mph with low to mid 160 ball speed. Yes this driver is really incredible. I only, fly z is a huge upgrade over the covert 2.0.

Is this significantly better than the BC+? I have seen many reviews with guys saying they prefer the BC+ over the Fly Z+. Seems like reviews for this driver have been somewhat mixed, particularly from Cobra loyalists.

I'm not sure if "significantly" is the right word, but depending on the player it might be...if you're dialed in on the BC+, there's no reason to change...but given how quickly many of the Cobra staffers switched, I think that says something...

I got on avrage 1.49 smash but hit alot of drives in the 1.5-1.52 range.
Both inside and outside, the driver is nuts.
I do custom fits as part of my job and I can tell you that I've never seen anyone with a such a steep attack angle spin so low.
I often hit drives in the 2000rpm range even to I am -2 attack.
I've had my heart set on a Vapor Pro because of its feel/sound but if the rave reviews hold true and the plus significantly outperforms it, I'll just have to get over it. Has anyone hit both for comparison?
I've hit both, with same shafts aswell.
Since I can hit with different attack angles aswell I can tell you that you can make the cobra launch lower with less spin then the nike driver.
However if you have a positive attack angle the spin will never get above 2500 with any driver aslong as you know what you're doing.

The Fly-Z+ is a heavy driver to hit compared to the nike.
Also worth mentioning, if you flip the weight backwards on the fly-z+ it's a much nicer smoother and softer driver to hit, the feel is incredible and it feels so easy to hit.
So if you are looking for that high launch low spin, try hit it a few times with the weight back and see if you can keep those spin numbers down

Played the bc+ last yesr myself with tour green shaft.
I spin about 450~ rpm lower with fly-z+, distance increased with 15 Yards on avrage and if you compare the misshits the fly-z+ outperforms the bc+ by miles :)

So we had a Cobra demo day at my course today where I compared the Fly Z + to my Bio cell + and unfortunately,no contest, the Fly-Z is much better. Lower spin, much more forgiving and slightly longer. I wasn't planning on buying more clubs this year, but I seriously need this driver in my life right now.

That's exactly how I felt. RIP 400$.

Money well spent tho, I love teeing up and hitting drives now. Something I never really enjoyed before! :D

Sold my bio cell+ in a matter of hours for 800sek head only (swedish).
The fly-z+ is miles better in terms of forgiveness specially if you hit it with the weight backwards, feels a lot smoother to hit as well.

Hope you get that driver soon enough and remember to get it fit for you with custom weights and loft settings will help to improve it even further! :)

You should really try to get your hands on one. But make sure to get it custom fit for you with the right weights, position of the weight and the right shaft/loft combo!
Would like to hear from you once you've hit it!

I have a Veylix Arcane and Aldila Rogue 125 MSI TS for my Bio Cell +, and love them both. I expect they will both be a good fit for the Fly Z+ as well. I may buy one off eBay, so I can get it sooner. I have seen varying reviews, where some BC+ enthusiasts prefer the BC+ to the FlyZ+, and then other reviews like on this particular thread. I am pretty happy with my BC+, but my tendency is to miss on the heel, so if the Fly Z+ can generate better ball speeds off the heel, and be more forgiving, then it may work for me. I also heard the BC+ has a deeper face to the Fly Z+, which is a must for me, as I tend to hit high on the face.

It does, and that's one reason I went with the BC+ (plus it was cheaper which was a bonus). Would love to see a deep faced Z+ model though.

I would get that smah factor confirmed. I've always thought 1.45 is absolutely flushed so an average of 1.49 sounds a little on the high side. Not saying you are full of BS, just saying LM may be telling fibs. I would also say that 1.45 for heel and toe hits is dreaming.

I will probably go hit some drives tomorrow in the Trackman at my job. I can take a photo of that and post it in this thread of all the averages.
My smash with the BC+ I played last year was average of 1.46.

I'll come back tomorrow with more info about this and with a picture of TM data.

I have had the Fly Z + for about a month now. I bought an extra 19 gram weight and put the 19g in the back and 15g in the front today.
Played 18 today with this setup and drove the ball incredibly well (for me). I just took a nice smooth swing and the ball just flew very straight and very well struck shots had a slight draw. With just the 19g weight in the back and no weight in the front last time out I had a number of shots with a fade and sometimes a bit of a slice.
Today I didn't have any sidespin at all ! Very straight with authority....extremely happy with this driver !

Haha thats the wierdest setup of the year!
Double weights interesting, however you need to compete in worlds strongest man to be able to swing that. So not for me but glad to hear you're driving it well! :)

As soon as I have time to hit the driver in the Trackman again I will do it. I have close to no spare time tho, but once I've done that I will post the results in here.
If people like the first post I will make with all the values I can do more with different weights and loft settings to see how it affects the ball.

Ok, I found one on eBay today for $295 new. I should have it on Friday, and will try and get out on the range on Saturday and compare it to my BC+ using the same shaft. I will be interested to see if there is much of a difference in performance.
