PING Eye 2 irons

Recommended Posts

I've got a set of square grooved orange dot eye 2 irons, 1-pw and then an eye 2+ sw(non square grooved) and I love them and wouldn't take anything for them. They're older then I am by like 6 years and I haven't found anything else I can hit as good as them. Just wondering if anybody still uses them or am I the only one and is there any new clubs that compare to them?

I have played Original Ping Karstens, Ping Eyes and Eye2s. All very good, very playable clubs. It's all in the eye (excuse the pun) of the beholder my friend. It's whatever works for you. I would consider them to be vintage and maybe classics. That's jmo though and all that matters is how you like them and feel about them. I really wouldn't attempt to compare them to any "new" clubs as I've come to believe it's more a matter of finding what feels right for you and developing a consistent swing than it is about what year your clubs were produced. I played about 2 weeks ago with a friend who told me she couldn't see a difference between me playing the mid 60's MacGregors I was playing and when I played my modern set. She did say that I actually seemed more accurate with the old Macs. So, if you hit them well, are comfortable with them and enjoy them then play them until you wear them out. Then find another set of them. ;) What anyone else thinks of you playing them shouldn't matter.
P.S. If you can hit that 1 iron off the deck you will make people crazy. I know. ;)

Best clubs ever made for me. Started with karsten II till I was 14 and got my set of no plus 85 eye 2s in 1992. Used them til 2004 and had a brief spell with some hogan apex blades.....but went back to the eye 2s and still used them today. Had a little dable earlier this year with some karsten III I found but after a while found them heavy and just not as good as my eye 2s. But I haven't played anything better than the eye 2s and I don't think I'll ever will.........brilliant irons

Not a thing wrong with them. You would not believe the guys down here that still play them that are not into vintage stuff like we are. Look at prices on flea bay and such they still command a high price used. They command a higher resell value than most anything used except for rare collectables. Even though they do not fit my particular eye I will concede they are a timeless classic design. Really I and others can't see anything newer that can compare to it in the same category ( read cavity back) If you hit them good and have confidence in them by all means keep on playing them!! Besides it adds to the fun when you beat guys playing the latest whiz bang thing with 25+ year old clubs
Almost thread jack but here goes. I played with a friend of mine that I had not played with in a while. the last time I played with him I had one of the sets of CB irons we were experimenting with. The other day he said "I see you have the old butter knives back in the bag and can work the ball like you used to with them you could not do that with the other irons you were playing" Enough said!!

Eidolon, just out of curiosity, how much are those (yours) worth? I had a set when they first came out and man did they rip a ball cover. First time I hit an iron to a green, it was an 8 iron with a Top Flight rock and it spun the ball clear across the green and it looked like the ball was shaved. Still have them in the attic and was thinking of re-shafting with graphite, perhaps that would help with the distance factors against the new clubs.

  • 8 months later...

Coming to this party late. Thanks to the folks in another thread for clearly identifying "what" Ping Eye 2's I have.

Got back to playing golf six years ago at retirement. Picked up a nearly NOS set of BeCu's from 1987 (1 thru L). They are fantastic. They are the club I always wanted in the late '80's. A few years ago, I picked up a cool set of Zings on eBay. I have really enjoyed those. My father in law gave me all of his golf equipment before his passing last year. It included a set of SS Eye 2's (1 to L) that I found for him about 15 years ago.

Loving the old Ping thing.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
