Had to re shaft my hogan bounce sole 1+ irons

The time has come! I have a the title says the bounce soles from '69 and they had original apex 3 shafts they were a bit weak but could get by with them until now the 7 iron snapped off and looked at the rest and a couple where actually bent a bit so I just put in s300 shafts and NDMC grips. Well after alot of sweating, swearing at those bleeping pins they are in. Those pins what a pain I couldn't punch them all the way out so I had to cut off the shaft a few inches from hosel and drill out then punch in the the 2 sides then pull the heads!!!! I had a few cold ones after this was done. I'm using them tomorrow morning so will be interesting to see how the heads respond with these shafts. I like these shafts as I have had them in other irons.

Has anybody else played the bounce soles or any other hogan 50-70's irons with new s300 shafts??

I have to be honest I am very interested to see how the 46 year old heads with upgraded shafts work.

Just curious spezza, but how demanding are those bounce soles to hit? I have read characterizations that they have the sweet spot the size of a pin.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

I have a set of 1968 Bounce Sole 1+ (the model with all the hash marks on them). Just can't bring myself to update them at all. Still have original grips on them (I scrub with my club cleaning brush before each shot to roughen up the grips). When I bought them I looked up the Maltby MPF rating on them and was expecting the worst. Turns out they aren't bad to hit, sweet spot isn't huge but isn't a pinhole either. You do need apply for a digging permit because the leading edge is wicked sharp, turf beware.

I think you will like them with newer shafts. I personally have never hit that type of Hogan. From the Mac side of the spectrum I switched my 1980 VIPs from stock Brunswick shafts to High Launch S-300s and have been loving it so far. Those are not the first set I have ever retrofitted newer modern shafts in. All those old forged heads no matter the brand or style are great they just need a little "waking up". It is a better way of getting a surperb set of irons for a low buck price. If you buy a set of pullout shafts it is even better. IMHO a older forging with newer shafts is compairable to any new forgings being offered today with only the POSSIBLE exception being JDM forgings

I would disagree the sweet spot not much different then modern blades really if at all

For me I play to 6.1 index and would rate each area o game for myself as

Driver/tee 8 index
Irons 3 index
Short game/putting 8 index

Play irons that suit your iron game not what your 1 index number is

Presume the S300s are Dynamic Gold, in which case your upgraded shafts are actually a throwback to an older design than the Apex shafts!

I know some people prefer the weight and the feel of TTDG, and unlike the Apex, it's supposed to be a low launching shaft. Did you notice much change in your ballflight with the new shafts, or was it largely a change in the feel of the club?

I was close to doing something very similar to what you've done, but with a set of '88 Apexes. In the end however, I found a set of late-model Hogan CBs cheaply and pulled the Apex 4s for replacements.

The changes were a lot
Longer
Higher
Much more consistent
Overall feel a lot better

The old apex 3 shafts being 46 years old just felt dead at the end to be honest also could t trust the shafts to do what they should on a well struck shot so I'm glad i did this really put a lot lie in these old forgings

How did your shaft changes go with the 88's

They've been great. I bought the 88s as a project. The installed shafts were a near-complete ragbag assortment, so I never played them prior to swapping out the shafts. But with the newer shafts installed, I think they're outstanding. I got a set of Apex Edge Pros as donors, which I played before dismantling them, and I much prefer the updated redlines over the AEPs. I have that much more confidence in these that I find it hard to swap for any of the other sets of irons that are now cluttering up the shed.

Nice I've never hit the 88's
Really with updates to these heads there is no way I feel imo that newer 1200$ irons beat these old clubs

I'm inclined to agree. I haven't hit any $1200 irons, but I've owned and played a couple of sets of chunky pings and another couple of sets of quality "player" CBs and I can't see the redlines as less playable than any of them. The last defence of modern blades over vintage is usually the sole grind, and even there the redlines give nothing away. I had my Apex IIs out during the week in quite firm conditions and the sharper leading edge and flatter sole worked beautifully, but the redlines will be good all year round.

I bought the set for $30. Irons are in great condition (7 iron has most wear). I'd never heard of Hogan shafts with an "H" designation before I saw these. The grips look great but are hard as a rock. I can't bring myself to change anything on these.

As an aside, I also have a set of '93 Apex Ft Worth irons. I DID pull the original shafts and paired them with a set of Nippon 950 shafts. The BEST "feeling" shot I've ever hit came from this set-up.

Here's the 7-iron from my '93

Here is a link to the thread on my Precisions -> http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1169103-my-hogan-precisions/

Other than the Precisions I've played the following Hogan irons;

- 88 Redline (do not recall the shaft, Apex 4?)
- Channel Back w/S300
- 99 Apex w/X100
- 03 Apex w/Apex 4
- 06 Apex w/S300

FWIW, the Precisions are the only set that I haven't already sold (or am trying to sell, Channel Back). Precisions have the best feel of the bunch. That could be the head and/or the shaft though. It's not exactly an apples to apples comparison with the variation of shafts and grips. The 06 Apex is a beautiful iron but I couldn't get past the obvious offset. I liked the 03 Apex better than the 99 which is exactly opposite of most reviews that I seen comparing the 2. The 88 Redline is a great iron with a well deserved following. The Channel Back didn't do it for me. I tried to like them but just never could.

I purchased the Precisions w/out shafts so, at this point, the Tour V is the only shaft that I've tried in them. It's a great combo. I owned a few factory Precisions with TT Rocket shafts and, without a doubt, like them much better w/the KBS.
I have a set of Precisions with KBS Tour V shafts. Fantastic combination!!!
Precisions with kbs.....wow!!!! Send some pics
How long have you had the precisions? What said you use for shafts before the kbs?
Have you played other hogans to tell us how they compare?

Here is a link to the thread on my Precisions -> http://www.golfwrx.c...gan-precisions/

Other than the Precisions I've played the following Hogan irons;

Wow those are sweet!!!!!
So do you game them regularly?
I will be once the league/tournament season ends. I played them for a while earlier this spring but once I started my league/tournament season, I put my black baby blades in the bag to stay. I'll put the Precisions back in a few weeks.

Rebby-

To my knowledge, the DG S300 shaft wasn't the best fit with the Ben Hogan Channelback iron heads.

If memory serves me, Justin Leonard's Channelback set from right after the British Open (which he won) had more than a few strips of lead tape on a couple of irons.

My clubmaker friend said the better fit might have been the Dynamic Lite shaft.

    • Titleist GT drivers - 2024 the Memorial Tournament
Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
