Interlock better for LD?

Recommended Posts

I'm not into long drive per se, but like any golfer I'm always on tue lookout for ways to squeeze a few extra yards out of my swing. Until recently I have always used a vardon overlap grip, but after hitting too many balls over a couple of days I got a little tendon soreness in the right pinky so tried an interlck grip. A couple of things really surprised me. Firstly was how natural it felt and how quickly it felt comfortable. The second thimg was the way my hands felt. I felt like I had a better grip on the club but at the same time it felt like there was less grip pressure.

My question to the LD guys is whether the interlock is a better grip for long driving than the interlock. For reference I am probably average strength in wrists and grip strength, and am a ML to L glove size, although I gave up using a glove about 3 months ago. It's early days but so far I feel like the interlock feels like I have a better hold on the club, but I also feel more relaxed in the hands and forearms at the same time. Is there a real advantage with the interlock, or is it more horses for coirses?

I'm positive the interlock grip will help you increase your average drives from 200 yards to about 220. Add the latest Taylormade Driver and you may even crank a few out to 250. ;)

Merry Xmas Playa!

BTW been meaning to ask, how'd you enjoy that RWC Final?

The key is what you said about the style feeling good and natural to you. That is the first step IMHO being relaxed. Tension starts with the grip and you absolutely have to be relaxed in the hands to get anything done period. Also having that tendon soreness in your pinkie is a sure sign of one thing again IMHO you were holding the club too tight. There is no single advantage in the type of grip anyone can use. look at Paul Azinger by most proper guru's standards he has a terrible grip but he did not do too bad with it did he? Hope I helped just my.02 worth

This is wrx, 200 is a choked down 7i. As for rwc, Kiwis the better side but ref made sure of the win for you.

Thanks for the advice, I will stick with interlock for time being to see how it goes.

Words to live by. I know my limitations and have been playing regular shafted irons since I turned 40. I have also gone up in loft on the driver and use Chrome Softs. Golf is hard enough without trying to keep up with PGA Tour guys witb.

Whatever is the most comfortable to you and yields the best results. I used to grip like I would a baseball bat and was never able to hit my long irons. I always hit the driver well, but my 3-5 irons were terrible. One day I tried the interlocking grip and was amazed at the control and better flight of basically all my clubs. I'm sure it has something to do with the 'ease of control' through less grip force. With the interlocking fingers, you can grip it softer and really get that whip action. It depends on the person, though. Sadlowski uses the overlapping grip and he swings 150mph....so it really depends on the person swinging, like anything else.

I find myself watching a lot of YouTube Driver reviews, seeing who hits which club the furthest, not realizing that my swing will be different than whoever else is swinging. Taking lessons and/or getting fit is the best way to go about it.

I've been really slacking on my Overspeed training, so I need to get back into it :) Would like to average 320 this year...
