Max Number of Miles?

Recommended Posts

I currently play in two leagues. Fortunately one of them stays with a 50 mile radius of our home course which is near my home. But the other one, my personal favorite because I love match play, will travel almost anywhere in Florida. One upcoming course will be about 150 miles from where I live. A nice little round trip of 300 miles.

Usually when a course is that far away with tee times starting around 8 am I will usually head over to a hotel near the course and make a weekend of it. If the wife is off of work she will hang out by the pool and relax and we can do dinner and such.

My buddy, who knows I drive that far to play in this league, says I am crazy. So I figured I would ask - how far will you drive to get a round in? And will you drive further if it's for a league or a tourney?

I have driven from Florida up to Myrtle Beach for some golf and have even flown out to Colorado twice. But those were golf vacations and were as much for hanging out by the pool myself as for getting some serious rounds in. But these leagues are different - I am driving a fairly long way and then having to warm up, relax a bit, and play a halfway decent round since it does involve league competitions.

I'll bet there are some members here who have turned a lot more odometer clicks that I have to get to some golf for a day. Can't wait to read some of the replies!

You are not crazy! Up until a couple years ago, I played on The Golf Channel Am Tour. Most of the local tournaments were within a 50 mile radius of Atlanta, the regional tournaments were all over the Southeast. We even had National tournaments, so I have travel the entire country to play in golf tournaments.

If it's fun, and you can afford it, then I don't see a couple of hundred miles as being too far.

I don't play in leagues anymore, but during wet weather here in California, the husband and I have been known to get in the car and drive as far as it takes to find decent weather.

I busted out laughing when I read your reply. Last year I drove 155 miles only to arrive at the course - and it was POURING. I headed into the clubhouse to use the restroom and while walking in my phone rings. It's the league director. "Jim, bad news. It's raining over here and we are going to cancel this week."

So, I used the restroom. Hit a fast food place. And headed right back home.

All wasn't lost though. At home it was sunny and I ended up hitting a local course with the wife. Was a little road weary and didn't play all that well but was still awesome ending to what had been a pretty rotten day.

I drove 5 hours once to play 18.

One way.

Was this a league or tourney? Special course (I would drive that far for Sawgrass here in Florida in a heartbeat)?

That is an awfully long way to drive for only 18 holes. Got to know more! I mean, that's probably about 300 miles or so, right?

When I first got stationed in Norfolk Virginia back in 1986....... I hated the place, and I didn't know anyone. I would load up my car on Friday mornings with clubs and clothes. When I got off the ship that afternoon, I would drive to New London/Groton Ct. and play the weekend with my buddies. I would go up every weekend if I didn't have duty, or not underway.

It was 9 hour drive...... 485 miles each way. My shipmates thought I was crazy!

I ended up retiring in Norfolk/Virginia Beach....................go figure!

I had a shipmate who's uncle lived about a 1/2 mile from TPC Sawgrass course and was a member He was a older guy who lived alone and was pretty lonely. He would ask my friend to come visit and play golf with him when he found time....... and to bring a freind if he liked. I ended up making about 6 trips down to Ponte Vedra with my buddy. We would load up our clubs in his Mazda pickup on Fridays and tear up the interstate all the way down. (about 9 1/2 hours)

The man wouldn't let us pay for anything, and would get mad if we did. We had some pretty good times arguing over paying for dinners and drinks. He was a really nice man.
