I've honestly never understood why anybody would ever think that big stupid looking red dot looks good.

The dots serve a purpose which is to move the COG towards the center of the putter. I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I am sure the appearance of the dots do not concern Tiger as much as the benefit in terms of balance. I like the dots but would probably not opt for them if I had a putter custom made for me.

I heard that the red dot(s) as well as being a balance-altering thing were also a Scotty Cameron imitation of the logo on a Leica (?) camera that he liked the look of aesthetically. Apparently one retro-esque model of SLR camera has the red dot as a trademark 'logo' and Cameron liked the look of it.

 

Amazing that Scotty Cameron would blatantly copy someone else's design, I know.. :)

It would be interesting to find out the source of this as I have never heard of the Leica theory before.

 

Tiger's gamer was the first putter I recall seeing the dots added therefore these are referred to as Tiger Dots. Tiger prefers red for his stampings so would the red color have anything to do with Tiger? Also. it is easier to bore a simple round hole into metal on a machining center than some other shape so would this be the reason for a simple circular dot to remove weight?

I've heard this story too, can't remember where. The red dot was scottys "thing" before the circle t stamp, but most of the dots were curved bottomed like they would hold a bb. They were all red too.

I think I read a fuller version in a golf magazine a few years ago, but I found this on the SC website that gives a flavour. It does sound as though Tiger Woods's putter was the first red dot model though.

well we know it wasn't 10 G to make, its a pretty basic cameron design without much customization from what I see. So it must be worth 10 G, if you can find an idiot willing to dish out 10 Gs for it.... Most likely anyone retarded enough to blow 10 G on a putter has already been conned for their money by someone else.

I know that the newport tiger used to win his last us amateur had the red tour dot. I believe that was the first tour dot scotty put on a putter

Leica is really known for their optics, meaning their binoculars and such. Many a WORLD military has them under contract.

If they had been "conned" out of there money by someone else, they wouldn't have the money to spend on this Putter.

 

Instead, they are very successful people that have money to spend on the hobby they love.

ok that was silly . Seriously to the subject of the thread I have had several putters stay in my bag for years. The most recent is my Odysey two ball.

 

I won it in a drawing three years ago . Its been in my bag ninety five percent of the time since.

If you drilled a .5" diameter by .2" deep hole near the heel, you would remove about 5g of mass and move the CG about .03" closer to the toe. Considering that both of the "Tiger dots" combined would probably account for even less mass differential than the example I gave, I would have to say the dots are effectively only cosmetic in nature and have very little utility.
