Expert advice needed from classic golfers

I get better answers in this section so here it goes. I currently play Mizuno MP-59s. They are shafted with regular i95 Aerotech Steel Fiber shafts. I love these shafts but at 69, and 56 years of golf, I need senior shafts. They now have i70, i80, i95, i110, and i125. I can use any additional swing speed and was thinking of getting the i70 in Senior flex. I am looking for opinions on going to the lighter shafts. I would not go above an i95 but there is the i80. Would you just replace the i95 with a softer i95 flex or go for the i70? I am currently a 9.7 index if that helps.

Hard for us to say which is the better option for you as there is no real right or wrong in this area and getting the right head/shaft combo is such an individual thing.

Trying the different options and being professionally fitted would probably be the best way to approach this question.

Seeing you asked....in my experience the lighter weight a shaft is the softer it plays to flex. Nothing dramatic here but in a lighter weight shaft I can still load a stiff flex just fine but in a heavier weight I loose performance and feel in a stiff shaft.

If you feel you want to go lighter stay with the current flex you play. If you want to stay heavier go to reg by all means.

I'm with Oldplayer on this. I would want to hit the prospective shaft in a fitting first rather than do a blind order. What is your carry distance with a 7 iron?

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

I was leaning toward the lighter shaft so thank both for your suggestions. I live in the mountains of Arizona. It is a 200 mile round trip to Phoenix or Scottsdale to be fitted and I don't have the time right now to go down there.

I hit my 47* wedge with the Rifle 5.0 shaft farther than my PW which is not right. I have the i70s in senior flex coming and I think (hope) they will be just right. I appreciate the advice and comments, thanks.

According to their shaft SS chart a senior i70 shaft wold be right for a SS of 75 to 90 mph. That should fit my swing. The regular is suggested for 85+ to 100+. I should find out soon how these will feel.

for what it's worth, I have 5.5 rifle shafts (notflighted) in titleist irons. 3.4,and 5 are AP2 , 6-9 are 716 heads. I'm 80 years old

If you can't get fitted for the shafts, I'd recommend trying one in your 6 iron and a different one in your 7 iron and see how they feel to you. If you could get extra heads (say, the 6 iron), even better; then you could try different shafts in the same head.

Thanks, that's good advice.

I re-shafted and re-gripped my irons with the Aerotech Steel Fiber i70s in senior flex and love them. It has a low kick point as opposed to the mid/low in the i95s so I launch the ball higher. I mostly play a muni with hard greens but left several ball marks today. Two birdies and a sand save for par on a par 3 made for a nice quick 9 holes. The dispersion is very good and the feel with the Mizuno heads is great. I have picked up some lost yardage which was main reason for the change. I'm a happy camper and thank all for the help.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
