Golfbuddy LR5 laser rangefinder

I'm finding very few reviews of this. Can any users give their opinions? It's one of the few in the price range that lets you turn off pin seeking mode. Perhaps this isn't a necessary capability. With pin seeking only models, can you shoot through gaps in trees or does it always catch the trees?

I have an LR5 I've used for 4 rounds now and so far I like it very much. I usually keep it in pin seeking mode, as I find it helps when shooting a pin with lots of trees in the background. It's accurate, fairly quick and very compact. For the price I am very pleased.

I had both slope and non slope. The issue I had with both was it would always pick up the object behind the flag no matter what setting I had it on.

Any more reviews on this by people that own one? I picked a new one up for $177 and Golf Buddy is offering a $100 rebate. I took a shot on it for $77 total. Hopefully it is a good unit.

Why would you want to turn off pinseeking mode?

 

For years I had a Bushnell Medalist which had a button for turning off and on the Pinseeker function. I normally left it off so I could check distances to near and far objects (bunker edges, etc.) either before or after shooting the pin. If I had it on Pinseeker, once it found the closest object if I wanted to shoot something farther I had to wait for it to time out and power down, then shoot again. Very annoying.

 

 

My home course has the prisms on flagsticks. So even without pinseeker it is easy to grab the flag when you want it.

If I had it on Pinseeker, once it found the closest object if I wanted to shoot something farther I had to wait for it to time out and power down, then shoot again. Very annoying.

 

 

I had the Medalist as well, mine would just get a new reading with every push of the trigger, I never had to wait for it to timeout. I really liked that model!

 

I'm pretty sure I never (intentionally at least) turned off the Pinseeker mode.

 

I gave the Medalist to my neighbor and play with him occasionally, I'll see if my memory is correct on that issue (but, I'm pretty sure it is).

 

The reason I replaced it is because after an extremely hot round in Las Vegas (110 or so) the display on the Medalist went on the fritz. It would work over 80 degrees only if I kept it in a cooler!

 

Other than your issue, which I did not have, why would one want to turn off the Pinseeker on a golf course?

Interesting. That's why I ended up replacing mine with a Tour V3 after quite a few good years of service. The Medalist still worked fine until it got really, really hot and then certain segments of the display would not come on.

 

I kept both of them and used the Medalist as my travel rangefinder for a couple years but eventually gave it away to a friend who plays in England where it never seems to get 90 degrees (and if it did they probably wouldn't play golf).

Returned my LR5S after one trip to the range. I got it for Christmas present. Screen is dark and the font is dark. Had a hard time picking up the flags past 125 yards with it. returned it for a Bushnell Tour Z6 Jolt and I love it. Superfast and the red readouts I can not live without. Pin Seeker with Jolt is a game changer and I will now be selling my sky caddy. Got the full $300 credit for the LR5S and the Z6 was onsale for $329. The Scan option was kinda cool on the LR5S when you could read it.
