When beer is cold but gets warm and is then put back on ice does this affect the taste of the beer? Or is this just urban legend? I'll hang up and listen.

Dunno but I suspect it happens all the time when transported from the brewery to your local bar/supermarket

Ok, having trouble finding the bizarre, sexual innuendo in that one.

Far as the op, to this day I think beer can get skunked. No?

Beer is one of two things I take seriously.

It's not ideal. Rapid temp changes are not good but if you're talking fridge temp-roomtemp-fridge temp once it's probably not an issue

I've had to move beer from a fridge, to a cooler, then to room temp because I wanted to put the cooler away and didn't have enough room in the fridge. Then I put it in the fridge and couldn't tell a difference when it was time to enjoy it. So, I haven't noticed a difference. But maybe if it went between two extremes maybe then the taste could be affected...

temp. change will affect the taste, it will become skunky, longer it stays warm and the warmer it gets, the worse it tastes.

some may not notice as much as others, depending on taste sense.

Nine years in the wholesale beer business speaking.

Then why is it sold unrefrigerated at the store after it's been "cold filtered" at the brewery? Transported in a warm trailer? I definately side with the crowd that believes this is a myth. Now ultraviolet light is another story but normally not an issue due to cans and brown bottles.

I think this is why he said the hotter it gets, meaning hotter than just room temperature.

I didn't even think about the light issue. Good point.

Married to Callaway Clubs but I cheat with Nike Clubs on occasion.

Im still going with urban legend on this one. Unless you do something extreme like hide them in composting grass like the other poster. But I think his beer hiding days are over haha.

Pingfitz is correct. It really depends on how warm it gets for how long. The shelf life for pasteurized product is typically based on storage at 72 degrees. If it get much warmer - say in some back room at 90+ degrees - the shelf life can be cut in half or more. The problems/mistakes are typically made by bad retailers (both bars and stores) or by the final consumer. They fail to properly store and rotate the product. (And clean draft beer lines.) It is the job of the wholesale personnel to ensure that the retailer follows through - but some are much better than others.

I bought a 30 pack of honey brown because it was on sale. I don't drink beer that often, mostly liquor. I'm leaving the beer sitting at room temperature and only chilling a few when I want to drink them.

How long can I expect them to last? I suppose I could put them in the basement where it'll be cooler during the summer, but I might forget about them.

If you keep it in a cool dark place it could last a long time. The shelf life would depend on when it was packaged. It should have an inkjet code on the bottles or package somewhere. I am not familiar with that brand but type the code on here and I am sure we can figure it out.

BTW: Like Pingfitz, I was in the wholesale beer business for 25 years (1981-2006) in Minneapolis. The family sold the company and I moved on. I started on the trucks in college and then sales, later moved to brand manager and sales manager. Our big brands were Anheuser-Busch brands, Heineken USA, Diageo beer brands (Guinness, Harp, Smithwicks, Smirnoff Ice, etc) and Bass Ale and some other imports, some regional beers, and a few craft beers as well. At one time it was a fun business. We had great growth in sales and market share in those years. There has been a lot of consolidation in the business since the 90's. The wholesalers get bigger and bigger - buying up territory from the smaller guys next to them and so on. Same for the suppliers and retailers. There are fewer and they are larger. It's close to an oligopoly situation. Thank goodness for all the craft breweries and family owned wineries and distilleries. It's hard for them to get the attention they want from the wholesalers, but slowly they are carving into the big guys market share - which is cool. (It's the big corporate guys who took most of the out of the business and forced a lot of the consolidation. It's too bad - it should be a fun business!)

I later worked for a Liquor & Wine wholesaler. I managed a wine division and helped my boss manage many of our huge portfolio of wines. One time one of our suppliers from Chile & Argentina had a shipment get "cooked" in very hot weather - probably coming up across the equator or on the dock in LA. It can happen. Corks pop and so on. When at the beer whslr. - we had containers of Bass Ale kegs (320 per container) freeze on a rail siding in Chicago one winter when it was super cold. They will burst at the seams. But for the most part, the large suppliers are very anal about the product and often have strict rules regarding handling and delivery of the product. They want the product to be the best it can be for the consumer. This means climate controlled distribution centers, warehouses, and refrigerated trucks. Spanking clean warehouse and rotated product.

I have to run - time to have a libation.

Best,

MM
