Ireland trip, travel questions

Recommended Posts

After reading this i just cancelled my booking for portmarnock next week and booked theisland instead (will be the first one out at 7:30 nezt friday).

Both courses were excellent, don't get me wrong, but I would recommend The Island if it were one or the other (cheaper too). I remember every shot vividly, whereas I can only remember the great shots and top holes at Portmarnock.

Some of the holes are quirky, but that's the character it had when it was built in 1890. PM me if you have any questions or want any info. However the Pro and assistants were excellent and can give you all of the tips you need before your round. Excellent crew they have there.

I was in Ireland for 12 days in June. Played 17 rounds and drove 1,100 miles. It was great. Here's a link to photos. I haven't had a chance to post them all yet, but the ones of the Island and Portmarnock are already there. Both were super courses. I think that the reason that Portmarnock is not getting the love it deserves from some of the posters here is that it is not as photogenic as most of the other great Irish links. Sometimes visitors focus on the lack of eye candy rather than the quality of the golf itself.

I plan on getting some photos posted soon. I agree about the photogenic qualities of the Island vs. Portmarnock as it is very flat. The eye candy certainly isn't up to par of the Island, but both courses are incredible. Still had some excellent views on the ocean holes. I would still say I preferred the Island from an all-around standpoint - Portmarnock was a beast though.

Dustin Johnson played at The Island GC last Saturday before hearing over to the British Open.

My son watched him in the back 9. By all accounts DJ hit the ball so solid in a very strong wind. He was 3 under on the back 9 and only managed to par the 2 par 5's. Definitely heading to the British Open with plenty of form and confidence.

Even more interesting, his brother hit it just as long as DJ.

Finally he was a real gent posing for photos with the members and I have a great photo of him and my son.
