I always used to have the short end between the tongue and the lace holes then the long end over the lace holes.

 

So the final threading of the laces goes up into the short end of the kiltie, then up through the lace hole, then up through the long end of the kiltie with the bow tied on the top.

I tried them like that and couldn't quite get the laces snug enough.  In fact, I actually ripped one of the laces trying to get it tighter and had to get new laces, so I re-laced as seen in the picture.

got these for $5 at Goodwill the other day. Never been worn; spikes rotted off but the rest of the shoe looks like they just came out of the box. Size 9 which is a little big for me, but they actually fit pretty well.

What a sound.  I never got to play golf when metal was used. But.  I ran track for 6 years and that sound is same as my spikes for running. 
 

you should hear a set  go “ clickety clack clickety clack “ at speed coming down the back stretch of a 400m.  It’s a music that I’ll never live long enough to forget.

I used to run track and remember that sound (usually in front of me though  )

 

I wore metal spike growing up but don;t really remember clearly the transition phase of it all. I think I just went to buy a new pair and soft spikes were the only option.

Yep.  Sadly that sound is leaving or left track too except for on the sidewalk etc. with rubberized tracks you don’t get the sound or sparks at night.  That happened in the 90s too.  At least at my school it happens then.
