I haven't had the pleasure of playing Kirtland but I've heard that it is very nice. Mayfield/Sand Ridge is a great option because you can play either course. IMO The Mayfield course is nice but nothing real special however the Sand Ridge course is a must play. Canterbury is my favorite of the 3, but it will be very difficult to join there.

Other Clubs to consider:

The Country Club- beautiful course located in Pepper Pike

Pepper Pike CC- Haven't played but I've heard it's very nice

Shaker Heights CC- My home course, a beautiful Donald Ross design with tough greens and great conditions

Barrington Golf Club- farther south in Aurora but an immaculate newer style Jack Nicklaus design

I can give you a little more info depending on which suburb you're moving to and also what your preferences are (nice practice area, has to be under 10 min away, nice locker room, good club tournaments, etc.)

Canterbury is actually pretty reasonable price-wise for his age as I was close to joining there 2 years ago when I was 32 years old. However, this wasn't a huge surprise to me, but you cannot walk and carry before 5:00pm. You have to take a cart or caddie and that pretty much ruined the affordability aspect for me since the cart fee was $32 IIRC and a caddie is obviously going to cost more than that.

There are enough good public courses, you may want to hold off for a year and see what it out there. Good deals to be had on a lot of courses.

I heavily looked into Mayfield Sandridge CC this year and am planning to join up next year (Summer was too packed with weddings this year). The price is extremely affordable for those who are under 35 years of age. Also the membership has grown with more younger members which I personally think is great. If you are married they allow for your spouse to use the entire facility at no additional cost (pool, tennis, golf etc.). Carts are $35 a round which is high but compared to other CC's in the area are average. You do get two courses for the price of one and both courses are extremely different (Sandridge - new school, long course, big greens, holes spread out), Mayfiled (Old school CC, narrow, smaller greens, etc).

I also looked at Canterbury which I have played and rank among one of the top five courses I have played. Besides price (Canterbury is higher than Mayfield SR) their range is small and you may not even be able to hit driver there depending on your skill level. The course is amazing but you are definitely getting more bang for your buck at Mayfield SR from the research I have done.

Public courses are OK. I am originally from Michigan so I personally think there are not as many options. Ranges and practice facilities are terrible really nothing that great. The public courses can get extremely packed as well. Some courses (cough..boulder creek...cough) stack their tee sheets with so many groups that it can take 51/2 hours a round.

Private message me if you want mire info ie pricing, benefits, etc would be happy to provide them to you.

it is way too far for me to consider joining but does Sand Ridge let you walk and carry your own bag?

I know at Mayfield you are allowed to walk/carry anytime after 10am on weekdays and Noon on weekends (dont quote me on that but i beleive that is what they said). Regardless you are allowed to walk and carry just not at peak hours (mornings on weekends).

At Sandridge the holes are spread out and it can be somewhat of a long walk. I had to walk it during a USGA four ball event and they were actually carting us between holes at a couple spots on each of the nines.I assume most if not all people playing take carts at Sandridge. On a side note I would put their practice facility up against just about anyone's on the Northeast Ohio region. Sandridge is strictly golf, no pool, no tennis court, even the restaraunt (more of a men's grille than anything). If you love golf that is the place to be form what I have heard and read.

Looking forward to next year!

All great courses listed here, I would toss Chagrin Vally CC in the mix always in impeccable shape. If money is a true concern I don't think any of these options are viable by NO means budget locations. BB
