British Open 2018 - Carnoustie

Recommended Posts

So I was watching the British Open with my daughter and she tells me that she really wants to go to Scotland and would like to go a round of the tournament. I know it's at Carnoustie in 2018 so I want to start putting things in motion. This would be our first trip to Scotland so any advice would be appreciated.

*Do I want to fly into Edinburgh?

*I registered for tickets on the Open website. Is there a decent chance I will be able to buy them or is it like Masters Tickets?

*Lodging...Don't really know where to start there so any thoughts? Where should I start?

Thanks all.

The last time the Open was played at Carnoustie, my wife and I flew into Edinburgh on Friday of the Open. I walked to the train station and rode it for about 30 minutes, got off within 500 yards of the tournament entrance. No tickets were needed, just walked up and purchased them. Had so much fun, I went back on Sunday.

I suggest you check out this site http://www.fergusongolf.com/, at least purchase Mr. Ferguson's book and plan your trip.

Just got back from a trip to the Open myself. I highly recommend it.

Tickets were easy, not at all like the Masters. You'll be able to get them no problem.

Flying into Edinburgh would work, but so would Aberdeen. Do whatever is cheaper. Just avoid Heathrow, which is a dumpster fire. Take the train at every opportunity...it's easy, inexpensive, and clean.

Lodging...not sure how expensive other options in Carnoustie will be (probably pretty expensive), but definitely don't stay in the hotel. It's not worth the price even when the Open isn't in town. The rates during an Open are probably obscene (and, more importantly, not worth it). Again, the train is your friend, so don't be afraid to stay out of town. There are a lot of train stops just outside Carnoustie, any of which probably would have much more reasonable lodging options.

Fly into Edinburgh or Glasgow, it doesnt matter, you can get the train to Carnoustie from either in a couple of hours.

Tickets, if you buy them before June of the tournament you save £20. You dont need to buy in advance, its just pay at the gate.

Pack for all weathers, you saw what Troon weather was like, well i live just 15 miles away and this afternoon the temp has shot up to 23degrees. Probably 10 degrees warmer than Friday/ Saturday

Yep ideally fly into Edinburgh if you are hiring a car, be aware that the journey from Edinburgh to Carnoustie is almost two hours on a train and the same from Glasgow.

Tickets will be available at the gate, they were this year and the last year I went at Lytham

I read an article a couple of weeks ago just after Brexit, if Scotland gets the referendum on the ballot to break from the UK and stay in the EU economically like they are saying... The Open being played in the Scotland might be in jeopardy.

What a pile of nonsense. We get Brexit scare stories all the time and before that, we had independence scare stories.

The Open is run by the R&A, which is based in Scotland. Why would the R&A ever decide the Open Championship should not be held within the borders of the country where it is based? Following the Brexit logic, there would be more chance of the Open to always be staged in Scotland. However, being sensible, even if we do break from England, I wouldn’t expect the R&A to take the open away from England or Northern Ireland either. The history and tradition of the game is what is important, not the political and constitutional landscape.

Not a chance. Ever, Brexit will have no impact on The Open Championship.

Exactly, if anything Brexit plus Euro Scotland would knock the Open out of England and Northern Ireland. Why would the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews (I guess technically just 'The R&A' now...) hold its championship only outside its own country?

Yeah! And there are plans, already in place, to dismantle the R&A clubhouse and ship it,brick by brick, along with the Old Course, turf by turf to the moon. Darn, that National Examiner has people in all the right places.

Yea... keep laughing, Brexit will have no long term affect on the Open. here is an excerpt from the article, not the National Examiner... The Economist.

" Perhaps the Open will continue blithely on as before—just as the organisers of the Ryder Cup insist that, for the purposes of this biennial golfing grudge match against the United States, Britain will remain part of Europe. But English golf fans who head to Scotland for the 2018 Open may need to pack their passports as well as their binoculars, anoraks and umbrellas. Who knows: they may also need to apply for visas as well as tickets."

You don't need a visa to go between Northern Ireland and Ireland. You won't need one to go between Scotland and England.

Its just another example of sensationalist worst case scenario reporting.

Apples and oranges comparison, that is like saying you don't need a passport to drive from Germany to France which are also both currently EU member states the same as the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland

Visas. The post was about visas. And no, you don't need a visa to go from Ireland to England or Scotland to England or England to France or from the USA to England, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany or Italy. Never have. Never will.
