What's good within an hour of Newport, RI?

Heading up to Newport, RI this weekend. The wife is exhibiting during Jazzfest. Might try to get out for a round or two Friday, Saturday, Sunday?

Any recommendations? Don't care about paying a little more if it's a nice place.

+1 on newport national. I played Exeter Country Club in the fall last year and really enjoyed it. Stay away from Jamestown Golf Course unless you enjoy incredibly long rounds of golf.

... In that order. :)

Drive a little farther to CT and you can get to Lake of Isles at Foxwoods (About 1.5 hrs from Newport depending on where in Newport you are staying).

Jamestown is a non-challenging 9 hole muni that has leagues all Friday afternoon (and they can be long rounds, because no tee times and 1st some-first served) and Sat or Sunday usually have some kind of tourney going on.

It used to be a course that you put $5 in a box and go out and play. (When I was much younger)

Then they 'redid' it about 10 years ago and it's one of the best publics in the entire area.

I think I drove by Meadow brook own my way home today and it looked great from the road.

Anyway... Great rec on Newport National. Really like the course. Shot a great round out there. Was actually -1 after 15 and finished bogey-double-bogey. Collapsed.

There's a certain freedom in just aiming down the middle and shooting for the middle of the green all day.

Liked the mix of 450 yard and 320 yard par 4s. Some pretty nice features around the greens, and the brick wall was great. Long round. Doesn't flow. Two foursomes waiting on hole 2. Full 5 hour round.

There's always a backup on 2-3-4 at Newport National because...

On 2, you have a blind shot and don't know if the players in front are clear enough. People wait a bit more than they have to. And then you have the two consecutive par 3's. It kind of opens up a bit after that.
