Diabetic Golfers?

Any out there?
I know I can't be the only diabetic out there. How many of you are out there? Do you check you BG during the round and what do you eat during the round?

Juvenile diabetic here... been golfing for quite a while and the glucose tablets and meter are always in the cart... I usually try to go out with a blood sugar of 180-190 then monitor it every 30-60 minutes, I try to never let it drop below 130 because it tends to fall off from there. It is alot easier to maintain your blood sugar a little higher than to bail yourself out if it gets too low...

I hit the wall too. At the turn, I get my wind for a couple holes, then WHAM! I tend to crash and I can barely swing because I feel my BG dropping. It's not dangerous, but when you are exerting yourself somewhat, any activity will burn excess glucose. I was gatorade all the time until last July (diagnosed), but I only carry a small one for emergencies and a candy bar. Usually, it's just peanut butter crackers or a nutrition bar.

I am Diabetic. I just make sure i eat well before i go and then i take a snack with me or two and keep a gatorade on me. Been a few years since i bottumed out on the course. I do keep a tube of Glucose in the bag along with a meter.

I got the big D for Christmas. A real bummer. Metering once a day. Also got new MX 25's.

My game is somewhat better because my diet is so much better.

Energy is definitely different. Went approx 3 months before being diagnosed.

Felt like I was going to die when I went to doctor. bs was 571 on Dec 23.

I drink lots of water and carry peanut butter crackers.

This is all still new to me and trying to stay away from old habits.

I need to get rid of a ton of clubs.

I have a great practice swing and then from the sphinter on I tense up when trying to hit the ball.

I do not know what scares me about hitting the ball.

Only broke a 100 a couple of times.

Type 11 for 18 years, had to bottom out once before learning.

Saw the black spots, got dis-oriented, got scared, lucky to be playing

with an MD who knew I was diabetic. He took me to the snack bar, and

I drank a coke, ate a pack of peanut butter crackers and finished the last three holes,

then ate a banana, drank a glass of Orange juice, and 20 minutes lated when i got home checked

my BS and it was 74. Went and got educated the next day at the Diabetes clinic.

Now I eat before I play, drink lots of water during the round and eat two granola/energy

bars during the round and eat when I get in. Feel good most all the time, and can finish off the round

now. High BS can get you a little at a time over the long haul, Low BS can drop you

in your tracks. Be Careful, Eat regular and stay hydrated.

I saw your post and I thought that I would respond. I am a diabetic and I had my onset in 1999. The age that i developed it at was sorta odd I was 27. Definitely not juvenile nor elderly. My diabetes is still to be determined seing that I take both copious amounts of insulin and oral meds (metformin, avandia and so on). Truth be told I'm a tad insulin resistant.

 

Generally my BG runs high (I'm not too sure what my 24 BG is in the American scale) therefore I am hyperglycemic as opposed to hypoglycemic. I do carry my monitor on the course with me and as a general rule I do check it at the turn. Ironically enough, the only tmes where I do see my BG at a "normal range" is when I am on the course.

 

When I do go low I carry Powerade for those just in case moments or o.j. People mentioned Scott Verplank, as far as I know he uses the insulin pump. I'd love to get one but with a price tag of 5K I stick to my syringes. The pen is not a feasible option for me seeing the amount of insulin I use. At 0800 and 1700 I take 100U of Novollin GE and 1000 and 2200 I take 100U of Novollin NPH. Another atlete that was a bad diabetic was Bobby Clarke of the Philadelphia Flyers. To be honest I dread going low (better for the body mind you than being high) because I feel like crap and when it happens while playing golf eesh! The shots go down the toilet.

 

Well it looks like that we aren't the only ones here. For the record, I thought that the 11th/12th hole wall was a thing of my imagination. I hit THAT wall as well.

Type 2 diagnosed when I was about 39 or 40. (almost 57 now) I eat a breakfast with not too many carbs. eat fruit and some kind of protein while golfing and drink water constantly. If the weather is warm I'll mix in gatorade in place of some of the water. Ther is no worse feeling than having your sugar crash when you are on the course. You get over the ball and your legs are just shaking or you just go out of it. Luckily my group knows of my condition and has seen me have to walk off (or be driven) to the halfway house or clubhouse. Usually 20 minutes after I get something in my system I'm good to go

Not sure about Verplank, but I am pretty sure I remember that David Toms is diabetic. He wears an insulin pump. He's a cool enough guy that I bet if you contacted him he'll give you some advice regarding what he does to regulate during the round.

Nope, Toms had a heart ailment, Verplank is the diabetic.
