130gm steel shafted driver still the best fit

Recommended Posts

My clubhead speed is around 90mph when swinging a 45" driver fitted with a 130gm regular steel shaft and a 7.5 degree clubhead. Too long, too heavy and not enough loft, and yet it feels great.

No fitter (thus far) has succeeded in fitting me with a lighter, longer/shorter and/or loftier driver that outperforms this steel shafted driver.

It's frustrating, because in theory, there is plenty of scope for improvement - lighter, longer, more loft, faster clubhead speed, more carry/total distance.

I am looking for inspiration and open to "sensible" suggestions ;-)

hard to believe that combination producing optimum launch, ballspeed & spin - carry/roll et.al

not saying it doesn't work for you - but a good fitter should be able to find (better) combination

but what do I know about you?

Exactly my own response for the past 12 months, "come on" and "there must be a better combinaton."

I used to be a scratch player, and at 65+ am still playing single figure golf.

My current setup also makes absolutely no sense to me, and yet it works. A low, penetrating shot that manages to hang in the air long enough.

I have tons of driver heads and shafts in my workshop that I have played around with over the years.

Thus far we have not succeeded in finding a better combination.

I "know" there has to be a better combination out there, I have been to recognised fitters and teachers, and yet I am still searching for that one response/remark/insight that triggers an AHA! moment.

What's the shaft weight for your other clubs - irons? fairways? hybrids?

Very possibly something about the mechanics for which the heavier weight makes the swing more consistent (and thus more reliable and adding confidence). If you've tried as as many combinations as you say you have then possibly a trip to a pro instead of a fitter would be the route to explore some improvement.

Makes alot of sense. Perhaps it is in my ingrained old school swing. My fairway woods, hybrids and middle irons were steel shafted, but I have moved to 85gm graphite shafts - low trajectory, which has helped me regain some "youthful" extra distance. But the driver remains an odd ball.

@ 45 inch with a (guess) 200g head and a 130g steel shaft that thing ist going to be very heavy and you are used to that ...

I would start with something in the 85g range and add some weight to the head to counter the effect of the lighter shaft and see if your clubhead speed (or actually more interesting ball speed) changes
