I think it all depends upon the listing. There are still plenty of cheap clubs if you look. It really comes down to two things IMO: has some restoration work been done; is it a complete set. I haven't bought much this year, but still got very good playable clubs for pretty much a song.

Playable hickories are another story entirely. Based on the prices being asked by reputable sellers I think you're almost further ahead to go with new!

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

+1 on the hickories. Unless you are someone like Tim (Teevons) who does about anything there is to do on a golf club, then a lot of money can be spent on finding a good authentic. Most people would be better off with reproductions, especially if all you want to do is play. This is particularly true of woods and niblicks, good ones are really hard to find and expensive when you do. Do yourself a favor a get a driver and niblick from Tad or Louisviile Golf. I wouldn't have said this 5 years ago but I have ...evolved.

Collecting is a whole other deal. If that is your thing, then get the wallet ready and have at it.

I dunno. I was watching a set of '67 VIP by Nicklaus irons on ebay that sat for weeks at "buy it now" between £150 and £180. Unless I missed something in the posting, they looked to be in very good original condition and very cheap for what could legitimately be considered "collectible" irons. Off the top of my head, so far as irons are concerned the only sets that command premium prices seem to be Hogan Personals, Mizuno TN87s and copper Eye2s.

I think all Blade Junkie was suggesting, with tongue somewhat in his cheek, was that starting a new thread in this part of the forum extolling the virtues of whatever it is you just happen to have for sale on ebay might manufacture some buyer-interest.

But, given the number of stories posted on here of outrageous thrift store or yard sale bargains (even dumpster finds!), it'd need to be one hell of a thread. Canny bunch of buyers on here, I think you'll find

Sorry copp7 - just seen your original question !

Yes - exactly as Birley Shirley suggested ... just a tongue-in-cheek social commentary describing the inevitable journey onto eBay when you read about XYZ classic clubs on golfwrx and decide you NEED to own or try a set yourself !

It's partly how I ended up with over 1000 golf clubs in 5 years of golfwrx membership, when pre-golfwrx one set of clubs at a time did me fine for 30 years of golfing :)

Threads like "what is the most beautiful blade" ... to someone like me with no off-switch, a thread like that simply means I find excuses to buy every set in the damn thread LOL. Same with "the 10 best persimmon woods you ever hit".

And don't get me started on that damn Hogan iron chart ... LOL ... I hate that thread. Every time it gets resurrected I usually end up buying another set of Hogan irons I really don't need. Such is my recent life as a classic golf collector nerd :)

As I am not a club dealer or investor I think all the blade deals on ebay are fantastic and I hope the masses continue to stay away from golf. It's very nice picking up and odd set or club for so little. You still see the occassional "antique dealers" with their 75 dollar 1-irons that will never sell. But fortunately these are the exception.

I managed to pick up a nice set of John Letters forged blades from a car boot sale the other day for £2 a full set 3 iron to pw.

I would say early 80s for them i would not class them as vintage but for £2 it was a great deal for me. The best part is that the faces are in very very good condition.

JL Master Models, Danny? I remember a lot of those sets in play at the club where I grew up. We had a Wilson factory up the road, but clubs from the big American OEMs were otherwise pretty rare. The MM irons look sweet to me, like a reverse engineered Armour 985. Always fancied picking up a set for myself. For homegrown classics, it would be hard to beat a set of Master Models and maybe some Sayers Mentors.

"No off switch"! Brilliant.

As I am sure I have said here before, I maintain that I have a "collection" not a "hoard", the difference between "a bit of fun" and "a mental illness".

And I also maintain that the difference is that if I were physically trapped by my collection, it would not be fatal. Certain individuals here could not say the same and would be found many weeks later...

But what a way to go....

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
