i may be moving to elizabeth city NC, anybody live or been around there? how's the golf, best course? if you live there i have more questions.

Sure - I live on the Outer Banks. The best and only golf course in EC is The Pines, which was recently bought by a private company and renovated. Haven't played it yet but I hear it's real nice - and looong. I'm playing a match against those guys next weekend and will see it then.

 

Albemarle Plantation is about 20 minutes west of EC and is also a pretty nice track. Lots of marsh and swamp - kind of a target golf course. Haven't played that course in years but I hear it's built out with houses a lot more than it used to be.

 

About 30 minuteseast and south is Carolina Club, which is owned by United Turf. Some of the best greens you'll find and an interesting layout. Island green on the 7th is pretty cool.

Your welcome. A Pines membership is actually pretty affordable and I hear it's a real nice facility. After I play there next week I'll try to dig up this thread for a brief review.

 

There are definitely worse places to get stuck than Elizabeth City. Not sure where you're coming from, but it's not a bad place. Plus you're 45 minutes from the Outer Banks and less than 30 from Chesapeake and all the shopping and whatnot. It's definitely a growing town - there's several people who've started living in that area and commute to Norfolk and Chesapeake.

So I got a couple of rounds in at The Pines, one last Sunday from the tips (7000y) and then a much shorter tournament layout on Saturday (6000y).

 

The design is nice. There aren't any ridiculous holes and it's not tricked up - basically what you see is what you get. For the most part the green complexes are well elevated and it looks like whoever redesigned it was kind of a Pete Dye fan. Tees fairways and greens were all in good shape, and the greens rolled smoothly. Rough was kind of patchy, but no big deal. The greens were very firm and tough to hold, which was frustrating with the elevated greens. It wasn't uncommon to have what you thought was a good shot end up as a short-sided 20y pitch or chip.

 

My only real criticism of The Pines is that it's jumbled up. The property it's built on is sort of a square shape, and the holes are kind of jammed together. Reminds me of some municipal courses I've played - you regularly have folks from other holes in your fairway playing the other direction.

 

But all in all, it was a challenging course from the way backs and an enjoyable two rounds. They have a smallish clubhouse and are apparently working to improve their food service, but the people were very nice and there were a couple of cute girls behind the bar, lol.

 

It would make for a good home course for you if you move down here, I think.

thanks for the review, i've been down here for like 6 months, and i mainly play albermarle plantation because i live in hertford. i cannot believe that albermarle plantation is a gated course and mostly retirees play it!! that course is TOUGH!!! Tight as hell!! I love it, I love the scenery and it is well maintained. I'm not a huge fan of The Pines, it's real wide open and like you said bunched together. It is very long but i'm a short player, so I play the whites. There aren't many golfers around here, so I've been playing mostly by myself. I love the weather. Golf almost all year around!!!

MY grandma lives there. NEVER GO TO PRIME SIRLOIN. It is a ghetto golden corral. The wal-mart there is pretty scary lots of different folks. Other than that i like it. Nice little town. We go twice a year but this will be the first year we will be golfing.
