Taylormade AGSI Titallium Insert

So I know that the insert on my Taylormade Rossa Monza Itsy Bitsy Spider is AGSI Titallium in an ugly red. As part of a complete refinish, I will likely keep the insert, but I'd like to change the color. Does anyone know if it's anodized or just painted by chance? Or if I'm up s@&t creek and will have to either completely replace it or leave it?

Caustic soda strips anodising but it does release some nasty vapours.

If it is anodized aluminum, Easy Off Oven Cleaner in the yellow can will remove the red and leave plain silver finish.

It's anodized, the agsi has the silicone-filled grooves. EZ off should remove the red, but might disrupt the silicone. Will leave the color silver as Josh said. If you're looking for a different color, anodizing is the only option.

Thanks TP. I prefer firmer inserts, so I'm hoping removing the silicone will help improve that. Stay tuned

Just be careful. I've seen them with the silicone removed and the insert basically caved in. Those grooves are like angled fins and they are really thin.

So I ruined the silicone in the grooves last night. The boil method want working, so I had to try the heat gun. Needless to say the silicone didn't last long. I'm looking to grab some oven cleaner today to remove the anodized red. Here's to hoping the rest goes well.

I'm looking for an interesting never done before paint job. I saw that labworx does a military green that might look killer on this thing but was surprised to not find much conversation about them in the forums here. Maybe I'll give them a whirl & see what happens.

I wouldn't worry about the silicone at all...it might change the feel but it will work just the same

It's all disassembled now. Just need to bead blast the whole thing & get it painted. With a newborn in the house & the holidays fast approaching I'm not expecting completion until 2017 unfortunately. I will likely replace the insert with something from Spryevo anyway

How did the silicone come out? Were you able to just clean it out of the grooves once it had melted? Any updates/ progress you can share on the project? I'm currently doing a similar project so I am curious.

I just melted the silicone out & used a dental pick to scrape out every last little bit. I did get the head bead blasted, but unfortunately that's all the further I've been able to get. Between work & a newborn at home the head has just sat on my work bench next to an old Scotty & a golo that had the black pvd blasted off. At some point I'll get back around to them all.
