Advice from those who've run charity tourneys

No idea where to post this so I stuck it here.

I am trying to help raise money for a worthy charity and the folks I'm working with want to do one (or in fact several) tournaments.

I kinda assume they have in mind your typical charity scramble. Now, I've played in exactly one of those, and I've read a bit, but I"ve also run many other types of fundraising events.

I searched and didn't find a thread quite like this, but may have missed it.

I'd like to hear any and all thoughts from anyone who has run these type of things, be you golf/country club employees, working for the charity, just privately fundraising for a cause you like - whatever. Let me know about your experiences, the good, bad, and the ugly.

Make par the maximum score a group can take on a hole. Will help tremendously with pace of play.

Serve a really good lunch. I'm involved with an annual tourney and a lot of the golfers say they look forward to this tournament every year because of the lunch after. We even have some people come and just eat lunch if they can't play.

While it's the bane of tournaments, sell extras. Mulligans etc., have some side games, long drive, betting on the par threes for being on the green (most people that hit the green will donate their winnings back). If it's for a good cause/charity, people will be willing to donate a $5 or $10 here and there, make sure and give them that opportunity to do so.

 

When I ran mine, to not make it take quite so long, we cut it down to a three person scramble.

Did this tournament happen yet? I am helping set up a charity golf tournament and it is my first time too. How did things go? What was the toughest part for you? What was your best source of fundraising?
