eBay Ivory policy

I have a Gripe with eBay. The MacGregor Master Driver I posted a little while ago. It was listed on ebay and they removed it because the Ivory face inserts. I don't have a big issue with it because people need to stop killing Elephants and all. But sheesh! This was built in 1926. Like I told the wife, maybe I'll just restore it or leave it and add to my collection to pass on.

Yes I did. I didn't know about their Ivory/Animal policy. I was trying to describe it properly. Oh well, it's just funny because it's been listed for a little more than a month and all of a sudden they remove it. I think it may have been someone wha tried lowballing me on a putter I'm selling with best offer option, he then basically insulted me then I blocked him from being able to buy from me and not long after that this happened. Coincidence? Maybe.

A lot of the 'ivory' looking material was synthetic, an early plastic type of substance called ivorine. While I can tell you how black insert vulcanite was made and how you can repair it, what ivorine was exactly I don't know.

I would have thought that anyone going into mass production (eg Wilson) would secure a material source that was cheap and readily available It is highly unlikely that much pure ivory was used and that by a small number of craftsmen in the UK before golf became popular in the USA.

If selling anything 'ivory' like in todays commercial and political environment I use the term 'ivorine'.

I can't blame them. I get your frustration, but seeing as they don't have a reliable way to date the ivory in the listing, it's a dangerous game to permit the sale even if the item is vintage.

stixman good suggestion. I do agree baloo. I'm just going to chalk it up to experience. Ivorine is what i'll call it or just "Fancy Face Insert" I typed in ivory on ebay and found all the listings say "Ivory Colored" interesting. Just can't call it Ivory.

Fancy face insert is accurate without running afoul of eBay's policy. Easy peasey!

Ivory is ivory. No matter how old it is. I really don't have an issue with it. I don't want people killing Elephants or Rhinos for their tusks or horns. I think that is actually really horrible and hearing about it does upset me.

 

I was upset when I started this thread, now I look at it as I can justify keeping it to the wife. Hehe.

That's right, love. Actually not allowed to sell them. Those little bits are ivory, the grips are made from otters and the headcover was a dodo.

 

Oddly enough, I do remember someone telling me they used to make golf bags from whale's... erm... family jewels. As I am typing, I also remember him telling me that French toast was actually a Chinese invention and that all dogs sleep pointing due north. That's worth a fact check.

Our dog sleeps SW, thats where her crate points anyway I don't know what she does when we close the door, it's better to leave her alone or she'll want to sleep on our bed. NOT HAPPENING! She's to small(8 pounder) and would be up in our faces.

Do not feel bad these guys have made me fire tobacco juice or coffee all over mine from time to time over the years
