I know I am late in replying to this thread, but better late than never. You don't need to go as far as the Catskills or Poconos for a very nice course with LOTS of elevation changes. Patriot Hills in Stony Point, NY (Rockland County, about 15 minutes from the Tappan Zee Bridge) is a courtse you will like. It's a tough course to walk. At leat 7 holes have big elevation chnages. Its a lot of fun. Herer is a link to some photos I took of the course the last time I played it (early Novemeber 2007).

tattersall in west chester has a few very large changes for the philly area. as well as hartefeld national in avondale, PA.

Tatersall is now called Broad Run Golfers Club.

Other courses in PA that have some elevation changes...

Olde Homestead, New Tripoli (http://www.oldehomesteadgolfclub.com/)

Iron Valley, Lebanon (http://www.ironvalley.com/layout10.asp?id=576&page=30232)

Woodloch , Hawley (http://www.woodloch.com/golf/course/)

Stonehedge, Tunkhannock (http://www.stone-hedge.com/)

Just over the border in New York is

Conklin Players Club, Conklin (http://conklinplayers.com/)

Links at Hiawatha Landing, Apalachin (http://www.hiawathalinks.com/)

Hope that helps.

Rich - West Point and Garrison are both worth playing. They are not as nice as Patriot Hills, but are less expensive. Garrison is a hilly woodland course with tight fairways. It's on the east side of the Hudson across the River from West Point (just North of the Bear Mountain Bridge). You can see the Hudson and West Point from a couple of holes.

I like the West Point course a lot. The only problem is the long distance between the 9th and tenth holes. Too long to walk.

Patriot Hills is about half way between the NY/NJ border and West Point. I like every hole at Patriot except the par 3's which are not very special. There is another course called Philip Rotella right next to Patriot. It's not as nice but the green fee is much less. It has a par three that has about a 100 foot drop from the tee to the green. Another nice couirse in the same area is Spook Rock. Very nice, but hard to get a tee time, especially on a weekend. New York Country Club is also in the same area. It has 4 holes with lots of elevation chnages, but it is not very well laid out and is over-priced. If you are looking for a playing partner when you are in the area, let me know

I forgot about Stone Hedge. The second hole there is just brutal from the tips, but 3 is a nice reward with the elevated tee.

The 18th at Hiawatha is a nice finishing hole with a risk/reward par 5. I can normally cut off enough of the dogleg to hit a mid iron in.

The second hole at Stone Hedge from the tips is just not a good hole, but the 3rd is a really good par 5. The 8th hole stands out as a bad one as well (short 90 degree dogleg left) as does 16 (I'm not a fan of blind par 3's).

I really like Hiawatha. There are some really fun holes on that track. I think I like Conklin a little bit more though.

I have only played at Conklin once and that was when I was in college. The outing that I played there moved to Hiawatha after one year and I remember liking the switch. I was not a huge fan of Conklin, it had that stupid half-wedge par 3 that was completely surrounded by water.

Shadowbrook is another track that has some nice elevation changes, but not so sure what type of shape it is in these days since I have not played it in about 5 years.

You must be talking about the 10th hole. I agree it's not a great hole, but there are plenty of par 3's that I've played that are much worse. It's a hole that certainly puts a premium on accuracy since you can't miss right, left, short or long.

18 is just a fun finishing hole with the huge elevation drop. Hit it and just watch it fly.
