Broadly speaking the i3 and i3+ are similar, the i5 and G5s again of the same ilk. The i3s are available in the O-Size and Blade models. The balades offer a smaller head, with less offset, and are considered more of a "players" club. The i3+ is essentially a refinement of the original i3 with less offset and a revised sole and bounce profile.

The G5s I haven't tried yet, but the i5 is a nice bit of kit. Essentially an Eye 2 reicarnated to my eye, but with a glitzy medallion. Good club, again offering forgiveness with some workability, with a moderate offset design. As far as I'm told, the G5 is a sort of i5 with a bit more offset and forgiveness.

Hard to say which is best. The one that works for you I suppose. Of the lot, the i3+ Blades were the best for me, although I'm not really a cavity-back man. The last ones I played and liked were my old eye 2 berylliums, which are still the best Ping irons in my opinion.

Thanks for your reply Mat. I am mostly familiar with the old Eye 2s, which my son has found and isn't giving back any time soon. The reason for my question is to determine whether going to the newer irons will greatly help my game. I have tried the I3 blades and found quite nice and trying to figure out if the g2/5 will be any better.

As with all Pings the forgiveness they offer is a bonus. All are forgiving, and have different other attributes too. For me, the i3+ was the best of the bunch as it offered a nice compact head with minimal offset, and was pretty workable to boot. I've pretty much exclusively played blades, and don't have a problem hitting the ball high so they were good for me since they offered the best of both worlds. The long irons were excellent.

I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. The most forgiving irons I've tried in the Ping range were the Zing 2s until the G2s came along. They're like stealing they make things so easy..

Any of them are a good choice, and one will perhaps be better than another. None of them seem to have the same cult following as the Eye 2s yet though..

Tuff to beat the Eyes 2s IMO but they feel very light compared to some of the newer irons out nowadays. Going to try out a friends I-3s he's trying to sell. I've also tried out the Wishon 550c/m combo set. Pretty sweet for a non-OEM set

I've tried the i3's and i3+ and they were excellent. solid, forgiving, and i love how the sole hits the turf.

That being said, I've just demoed the i5 5 and 9 iron, and they were easily the best irons I've hit. Straight, long, and medium high trajectory (I'm a low ball hitter, so these helped). The sole just creates a great, solid impact when striking the ball. I think these are going to kick my 735s out of the bag!

They were black dot and had TT DG stiff shafts in them.

Solid, and I actually like the utilitarian look of pings vs. the glitz of an x18.

You can't go wrong with Pings...haven't tried the G5, so can't comment.

Good luck

i just traded g2's for the g5's. i did not think ping could improve on the g2's, but i was wrong. the g5's are a very solid iron, for me.  i am a 14.3 index.  they are stupid easy to hit, just want to go straight and long.
