Transportation in Scotland

Planning on trip next August for Scotland golf. Planning the trip myself for 8 golfers. I have everything lined up as far as lodging and golf but am having trouble finding affordable car rentals.

 

Plan is to arrive in Glasgow. Drive to Royal Troon and play Royal Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry (3 nights). Then drive to St. Andrews. and play Old Course, Castle Course, Carnoustie, and Kingsbarns (6 nights).

 

I have been looking for two larger vehicles for all 9 days but seem pretty expensive. Can someone point me in the right direction as far as affordable vehicle rentals in Scotland?

 

OR is it possible that We get taxi from Glasgow to Royal Troon. Turnberry provide transport to and from course. Rent 2 vehicles for one day for drive to St. Andrews. Get taxi to Castle Course and Kinsgbarns and Carnoustie or provided by golf courses. Then taxi to Edinburgh airport. Do courses provide transportation like this?

 

What do you think would be my best option?

Prestwick is my home course, very nice at the minute!

 

Anyway, landing in Glasgow you should be able to find a rental place either near the airport or just into the city. In which case its just a case of compare and see whats cheapest......options are Arnold Clark or Enterprise basically....I think they do mini bus rental too but there are proper dedicated minibus rental firms if thats what you prefer. And by that I mean a Transit van sized thing, not what Americans class as a mini anything!

 

You could also take a train to Troon and then from Troon to Prestwick place or taxi, bus etc and again over to near Turnberry and then taxi to wherever you're staying.

 

A taxi from Troon to Edinburgh or Glasgow to Troon etc would be extortionate, probably a couple of hundred for Troon to Ed.....its about a 2 hour drive from memory

I used Celtic Legend. We rented a Mercedes Vito. Four guys 4 big luggage and 4 golf bags three of which were SKG cases. Celtic Legend uses Arnold Clarke, however there fee is a little less than renting directly from Arnold Clarke + included up to 3 additional drivers and GPS included in the price. Big recommendation for Arnold Clark. Much cheaper than the big name rentals, great service, well equipped vehicles. Might be the best car rental company I've ever dealt with.

I'm pretty sure if you google, 'golf transport scotland' you can find a host of companies which will transport you themselves. So for example they will pick your party up at Glasgow Airport and take you down to Troon etc. Plan the full week with them or just get your rentals down the coast.

As an aside to this, if you have a american express card I highly recommend you use it for your car rental regardless of you rent from.

 

On a trip last spring, I rented a car in London to drive to Scotland and back.

 

There was an incident with me, a truck and a parked car and I was soon in a 2nd rental with the gloom of a large bill hanging over my head.

 

It took a couple of months but Amex paid for all damages.

Europcar might be worth a look too. Their rates have always seemed competitive to me. They will also deliver a car to your hotel and pick it up at the end of the rental period for a small fee. ( You may not want to be driving on the wrong side of the road wihile jetlagged and within an hour of getting off a trans-Atlantic flight.)

We went to Scotland this past June. Arrived Edinburgh and had a driver take us to Troon, Then picked us up and took us to St Andrews. When you are in those towns you can rely on walking or local cabs etc.

If you can drive manual transmission, rent a standard. Automatic transmission car rentals tend to be incredibly more expensive in the UK and the rest of Europe.
