Pumpkin Ridge - Web.com tour conflict/help needed

Recommended Posts

We are planning a trip to Bend next August. Due to flight arrival times, we are going to play one round in the Portland area after flying into PDX before driving to Bend.

We were going to play at Pumpkin Ridge. As luck would have it, the Web.com event is taking place the same weekend as our trip. I called the pro shop and they told me they do allow some limited play even while the Web.com tournament is underway.

Has anyone ever played there while the tournament going on at their other course? Will it be a logistical nightmare trying to get in and out of there? If so, is there another course in the area you would recommend?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Do not play pumpkin if you are a private club member, go play CECC, Royal Oaks or drive down to Eugene and play the country club (best track in Oregon). While in Bend send me a PM and I will take you the BGCC best course in Bend and the best greens in Oregon period. Also do NOT play Tetherow (kidd's worse course ever).. Try and play Fazio at Pronghorn and Brasada is fun as well...

Some negative views on PR here, but I'm a fan

I really like Ghost Creek. I think it's a great design - straight-forward and challenging. For me, it's the top public option in the Portland area, with two caveats. It is unplayable in the wet months and it's overpriced. The first won't be an issue in the summer.

That and the amount of time it takes to play the course are my issues. It’s a good track.

Weren’t the LPGA in town the same weekend last year basically ruling out CECC?

Tetherow is a love hate thing. Personally I love it but was told that even Kidd admits he made the greens to severe. Told a friend that he was going through a divorce and really angry at the time.

Thanks for all the responses!

To answer your questions:

1. We're planning to play Pumpkin because my research showed it's the best public track in the Portland area. Flight won't get into PDX until around lunchtime. No time to make it to Bend and play there before dark. I'm definitely open (especially after reading the responses) to a different course. 5.5 hours is sloooooow for sure. We'd be playing on a Saturday afternoon so we're likely looking at the slowest round of the week.

2. Live in Nashville. We're looking to play what would generally be considered the best/nicest/most fun course in the area. Price isn't a consideration since we are rarely in the area.

3. I am a member of a private club here. Will look into CECC and Royal Oaks. Are they fairly easy to get on?

Wardonation - thanks very much for the invite! I'll PM you when our trip gets closer and our itinerary firms up.

Negative, ghostrider. That distinction goes to Langdon Farms and it's on your way to Bend. Win-win!

Play Royal Oaks if you can get on. Greens will be awesome. Also Waiverly is also is a blast if you have connections through a private club. Great River view and track

I read it all the time but i truly cant believe all the negative views on Pumpkin....I've caddied in the Web Tournament there for the last few years and its simply a fantastic golf course. Now i get that it may be waterlogged for a good part of the year but EVERY time I've been there it had been sensational.

OP, I'm not fully sure if you know there are 2 courses at Pumpkin Ridge? Witch Hollow is the private course that the tournament is held on, there is not a chance in hell you will get a round on it during tournament week. Ghost Creek is public, there are always public playing it while the tournament is going on.

Great part of the country for golf in the summer, you will love it coming from the Nashville heat.

Are you saying how great Witch or Ghost is?

Most people I talk to, myself included, that have issues with the course don’t really have issues with the layout. It’s the price, pace of play and the condition for 2/3 of the year. I play out there once a year and have only had 1 out of maybe 10 rounds take less than 5 hours with 2 of those 10 being 6+ hour rounds. That has really jaded my opinion.

Also played last year in July and the conditions were great but for a $100+ why in the world are people hitting off mats on the range?
