Seriously, sometimes I don't know why I bother.

hitting 2-4 inches behind the ball.

I mean, I have a 10 week old baby boy so for the year I've played two rounds and have five trips to the driving range. Still, I went to the range on Tuesday and was hitting my irons great. I was all over the 175 and 200 yard greens. I was hitting my 7 and below consistantly left but it was consistant. Went to the range today as the grass tees are only open on the weekends. I was consistantly hitting 7-pw between 2 - 4 inches behind the ball. I was doing well with the 4-6. Anyway, I figure that I was either not bringing my club back wide enough and was coming in too steep. Oh, not ony was I behind the ball but I was hitting out near the toe as well with all of the clubs. I guess I was not going back wide enough, coming in too steep, and probably rotating with my shoulders/arms instead of my hips.

Anyone else want to take a guess? Maybe I should just get a Wii and play some Tiger Woods 2007 golf.

It sounds like you might have stand a bit too close to the ball w/ short irons, cause the casting move.

One other thing is when you hit off the mat, and hit behing the ball, it'll bounce the club through the ball, instead of digging like the grass tee would.

A common fault of hitting behind, is cause by failure to transfer the weight to the front leg.

I feel for you as I had gone through this twice in the past ( arrival of the newborn ), hope everthing work out, and enjoy the time with family, diaper and crying and the whole thing. This time with your child will never return, treasure it.

Don't give up! Try to get a lesson. Or:

 

1. Make sure you're not swaying or overshifting your weight to the right in your backswing.

2. try moving toward the target while your left shoulder is still down-- but careful, don't let this speed up your tempo!

3. Relax your hands.

4. Move the ball back in your stance

5. Keep the left bicep pinned to the left pec

6. Read Bobby Clampett's "the impact zone," especially the sand drill. I'd tell you what it is, but it's so good, no one should get it for free.

 

Of course I don't mean do all these things; just try them. Best is to get a real lesson, but as I have young twins, I know this doesn't always work.
