Inching - Golfer finally gets what's coming to him

Lindsey Smith, a senior bank official in Scotland, was suspended from Nairn Golf Club after being branded a cheat. Smith escalated the matter all the way to the courts, but the Court of Session in Edinburgh found nothing wrong with the way the golf club reacted.

 

Here's how John Robertson on the Scotsman Newspaper described the incident, "On the tenth green, Mr Scott told Mr Smith he had marked his ball wrongly by placing the marker in front, rather than behind the ball, so that when he replaced the ball it had been closer to the hole than when he lifted it. He alleged that the same thing had happened at the seventh hole. Mr Smith denied the accusations."

 

There may have been some club politics involved the suspension. Maybe Smith was dislike by many members of the board. But, the Scotsman also mentioned, "There had been similar allegations made against him twice in the past."

 

I was thrilled when he read this story. To mark in front of one's ball then replace with the mark behind the ball is an extreme case of what The Green Blazer calls, "inching." I've been watching both hacks and good players do this for years except most don't have the audacity to be so blatant about it. Most inching cheaters put the mark tightly behind the ball, then replace with a significant gap between the mark and the ball. This is probably the same crop of people who bump their lies when no one is looking. The Green Blazer would like to urge everyone to learn from this and give your next opponent a stern warning after witnessing them inching.

When my boss drove his tee shot into a grove, he shouted "Young tree! Young tree!" then proceeded to drop the ball somewhere more convenient to hit. You look where he is and what you see are century-old trees.

 

Same sense? Did it matter because I was playing boss golf anyway?
