How many tournaments?

Recommended Posts

How many tournaments do you play in a year? I am a regular working guy with an 8-5. I play all of the tournaments at my home course and then play several in nearby towns. Last year was by far the most I have ever played in 1 year with 13 tournaments. Most were some form of scramble/shamble format and a couple were 2 man low ball events. About half were 2 or 3 day events. So all in all I played 22 tournament rounds. I was curious to see how many most of you play yearly.

Like you, I work a 8-5 job and am not the boss! That means no days off for golf unless I take a vacation day. So, I play in zero weekday tournaments. I don't really enjoy scrambles/shambles, so I don't play in many of those. Usually I try to play in some individual tournaments. This year I played in 1 tournament as part of the local Golfweek Am Tour (18 holes), I played in the Missouri MidAm Championship (36 holes) and I played in one local 27 hole individual. So a total of 3.5 tournament rounds.

I play in all of the things that get posted as tournament rounds at my club (club champ, matchplay champ, super's revenge, etc.) as well as the 4 day city tournament (assuming you make the cut), and between 8 and 10 of the state golf association events every year. Some of those events are 2 days, some are 4, and a few are 1 day qualifiers. Typical tournament rounds posted in a season are generally around 30-35 based on how I do and cuts made.

I am self-employed, so I have the luxury of being able to get out and play more than some on here, but there have been plenty of times where I just can't make an event that I've signed up for work based on a customer need and given that they ultimately pay my bills, I pick them over golf.

I also work a typically 8-5 so I don't play during the week.

This past year I played in 5 if you count mens club 18 hole "tournament" rounds. This was lower than I would've liked. I didn't manage my time very well and didn't make the effort to get to the range after work or play at least once most weekends.

In 2018 I hope to play 7-8 mens club weekend events, 4-5 "city" events, and the US Am qualifier. If I'm feeling really good about my game, I'll sign up for the US Open qualifier because you typically get to play a pretty nice course under tournament conditions.

As per previous posts, I ALSO have a daily job, 7:30-4:30, so most of my tournaments and tournament rounds occur during the weekend. Last year I played in just about every tournament my wife would let me (we got married Dec. 2016), and being in our first year of marriage and not having kids yet, I took full advantage of that.

So all in all, I played in 13 tournaments, 2 of those were multi-dayers, the rest scrambles AND also played in a US Open Local Qualifier and 2 MGA (MN) Qualifiers for the State Match Play and State Amateur.

I'm hoping my wife will let me play in as many tournaments next year, and definitely hoping for better results in the qualifiers. Apparently high 70s doesn't cut it for any of them lol.

Few scrambles, few 4 balls, couple one round qualifiers, probably 5 or so state sanctioned events...

Figure 3 one round scrambles

3 two round fourballs

2 one round qualifiers

2 two round individual tournaments

2 three round individual tournaments

1 4 round individual tournament

This seems about right, sometimes more, sometimes less...I try to play all of our "big" state events...mid am, state am, and state open as well as another state invitational or two.

Last year I played in all of my men's club monthly events. That was 12 total tournaments, although only 1 of them was actually counted as a "T" score. I also played in 5 SCGA team play events, including 2 playoff matches (also counted as "T" scores). So in total, I had 17 tournament rounds of some form or another, 3 of which were recorded as tournament rounds for handicap purposes.
