University of Georgia Golf Course

Hey guys,

 

I almost don't want to tell anyone about the UGA course, but it was one of the best public golf experiences I've ever had. The layout reminded me of some PGA tour courses I've played, and the conditioning was so pure.

 

It's a big course, but it was playing extremely firm and fast. Lots of roll out on the drives (which was essential from the Bulldog tees) and the started said the greens were rolling 11.8.

 

I live in the north Atlanta area, and I haven't found any public course (maybe Echelon? but pricey...) up that way with this kind of layout/conditioning/walkable (not gonna walk Echelon).

 

Anyways, really enjoyed it. Can't wait to go back.

It’s a shame UGA didn’t want to pony up the TV money to keep the tournament there. The title sponsor, Stadion, would have loved to continuing sponsoring the event. The company founder is an UGA alum and was apart of the 1980 national championship football team, so I’m even more surprised the school didn’t want to support the event any longer.

UGA is not a private college, they cannot just spend the States money anyway they want. Most all tournaments need a sponsor to put up a large sum of money, UGA was providing the golf course along with a lot of staff, maintenance, transportation, etc. Athens is a small college town and even though it was a very nice tournament I don't think it got the support needed.

OP, I totally agree with you. I'm not biased because I am an alum, but I really think this course is a gem!!!! Second best public access course in the state to Savannah Harbor IMO.

I’m not an alum and have zero affiliation with the university and I love this golf course. First, it’s HARD! Plays very long and the green complexes are devious. Approach shots that are struck solid will hold, but any slight mishit will go bounding. Conditioning is always pristine. The new complex that was built for the UGA golfers looks fantastic from the outside. There’s a reason UGA not only puts a lot of guys on tour, but they typically go on to have successful careers. I think this golf course is the perfect training facility for a future tour professional.

 

The Georgia Club, just down the road, is nothing to sneeze at either. Not nearly as difficult, but a VERY nice place.

The UGA course is one of the best available to the public, period. It is a difficult course that offers all types of challenges and the greens are always "rollin". Love this place and play it every time I'm near Athens. I also like to visit Lane Creek. Shot my best score ever there and tied the course record.

Lived in Athens for 9 or so years. Loved the course, and awesome driving range.

 

Nota tricked up course, wide open tree-lined fairways, but one that puts a premium on good putting and adaptation to elevation.

The Ga Club is a nice 27 hole facility, but you don't want to live there or become a member. It has changed owners 3 to 4 times in the last 10 years and you will get screwed on membership and property values. Homes started in the 600"s to 1,000,000's, now they are building homes in the 300's.The original homeowners are really screwed!

I loved that course. I used to play there all the time when I lived in Atlanta, it was faster for me to drive the hour, play in 3 and drive back, then drove 30 min to play some s*** course and wait 5 hours.

Loved the course when I went to school there. Graduated in ‘12 and moved to Missouri for a job and have missed having access to it. Only played it twice since then and I’m happy to say I will be moving back to the Athens area full time here soon. Easily one of the best public courses I’ve ever played.
