I’m considering buying a budget rangefinder. Help me please.

Recommended Posts

After retaking up golf nearly 18 months ago after a 20 year absence, I’m completely hooked. Although I can’t be bothered getting an official handicap I play 2 or 3 times per week socially, luckily my own business allows me to do this.

I’ve had a few scores in the 70s over recent weeks, so it’s all going in the right direction. My home course is quite hilly on both of the courses there so often using my Garmin S20 I leave it a bit short, obviously not allowing enough for the slope, so I’m looking for a rangefinder to partner with it.

I’m imagining it will only be used from 200y or so, so I really don’t need one that’ll read the distance from the moon, probably mostly from 150y to be honest as I’m finding that I don’t know where the flag is, often landing on the green and then seeing I’m 15 yards short of a rear pin. And of course no mention at the course of the day’s pin positions.

So slope is wanted.

Given my current income I don’t have money to burn, so I’m really not looking for an all bells and whistles one, just one that’s accurate, slope, reliable, easy to use.

The NX7 Pro looks interesting. Any others I should be looking at?

I’m in London, England.

Check out TGW’s Phoenix: https://www.tgw.com/tgw-phoenix-slope-rangefinder. Has all the basics plus slope and has lots of positive reviews. They put it on sale for $170 quite often too.

The GolfBuddy LR7S would be another to check out but it’s slightly more expensive than the NX Pro and the TGW.

Best of luck!

The Precision Pro NX7 that you've already mentioned would get my vote for best value vs performance.

I've been really happy with my Leupold GX1 I've had for like 4 years now. I think Leupold has a model or two <= $200

Another vote for precision pro. Not sure where it can be purchased in England, but the company is very active on this board and I know they run a wrx special most of the time.

My vote is for the Precision Pro NX7-Pro (Slope) model. I’ve got over 20 outings with it and it is quick and accurate. I wear a gps and the NX7 has been more accurate more times than not.

I love golf

Just realize that the slope functionality really isn't "one size fits all". Some additional 'adjustments' by might be needed depending on your particular ball flight.

Yes, I imagine so. The slope function surely can only give you an actual length of shot so if you stop the ball quickly then you’re going to need to carry it all that distance, but if you’re hitting it low with plenty of roll-out it’ll be different.

That's true as well, but I was actually referring to just carry distance. Calculating an adjusted carry distance is dependent on the actual ball flight - particularly the decent angle and apex. How good the adjusted number will be (for you) will depend on how close your actual numbers are to the ones assumed by the device.

cant beat the bushnell neo watch, beats picking up rangefinder every hole, just look at your wrist

I’ve got a Garmin S20 which is great. The problem is I’ve been noticing when the pins are at the back or the front of the green and I’ve hit what I thought was a good shot im still several yards away as I’ve been hitting to the middle. This should provide more accuracy and will be used in combination with the Garmin.

The rangefinder uses a typical trajectory model to calculate the slope adjusted distance. You'll have to figure out your own trajectory factor to apply to the numbers you get. If you hit the ball lower than typical with a shallower decent, you'll need to increase the numbers for uphill shots and decrease for downhill. That is, your trajectory will land shorter on the uphill shots and longer on the downhill shots.

Sounds harder than it is. If you play on hilly courses you'll figure it out pretty quick.

If you hit it higher than the model used, you'll get the opposite effect. You'll land shorter on downhill, longer on uphill than the rangefinder says.
