Sorry to bump an older thread but I have been researching TM sleeve compatibility and can’t seem to find a concrete answer. I recently got a 2017 M2 head from eBay. It came with an adapter that had TP written on it and had a longer ferrule. Had my shaft put in and noticed when the head was installed there was a rattle in the head. Sounded like the bolt from the adapter sleeve was loose or something, very odd. For other reasons including that one I took it to a different club fitter for a second opinion. He said it was the wrong adapter. He put in an adapter that had a shorter ferrule and only had .335 written where the TP was on the other adapter. This worked perfectly when installed. No rattle, nothing. I compared the two adapters and they were very different in ferrule length (by a good 1/8 inch). I couldn’t see with the naked eye any other size differences. Neither ferrules had the loft numbers written on them, just words higher, std loft, lower.

I’m a noob when it comes to this stuff so can someone shed some light on what they think may have happened here? Did I get the wrong adapter? Unfortunately I don’t have any pics to illustrate. I’m sort of asking after the fact. And I’m sort of pissed that since the ferrule on the first adapter was longer, now there is a ring right above the new adapter from where they sanded the shaft.

There were a lot of different variations on the second generation TM adapters - but they all would be compatible. The differences are only cosmetic or just different amounts of adjustability +/- 1.5* vs +/- 2* - but that doesn't effect how it fits into the heads.

Well there can sometimes be some mix-ups with the wood adapters and rescue adapters but in your case that's not the issue since the rescue adapters wont even fit into the driver/fairway heads. It's only the other way around that would result in a poor fit/rattle.

And with the gen1 adapters (that are not compatible) you wouldn't be able to insert fully into the newer heads - so that's not likely the issue either.

here are some examples of the different variations.

The M3/M4 use the same adapter as the M1/M2 but they do, I believe, need a different screw.

So if you were able to fully insert the adapter into the head, and able to get the screw tight (torque wrench to click), I honestly can't think of what would result in the rattle.

The main concern for getting the 'right' adapter really centers around the correct shaft tip size.

The one I received with the head looks most like the third one you listed.

The one that ended up fitting properly and is installed now looks like the 4th one you listed.

It definitely was not the last one since I had the dome shaped screw and not the new, more cylindrical looking one.

I was able to fully insert the "bad" adapter into the head, I could tighten the screw until the wrench clicked, and then when I shook it there was a rattle sound which sounded just like when the adapter was out of the head and I shook it with the loose screw in it. This was repeatable several times myself and the club fitter so it wasnt a one off sort of thing. We even tried installing it on the different settings all with the same result. The screw, or maybe some other part, was rattling around somehow.

Maybe the adapter was ok, but the screw was incorrect length? Or perhaps it was a Chinese knock off adapter that was out of spec? The company I bought it from on Ebay has not responded to my concerns about it so I dont know what they have to say about it.

Thank you for your information, Stuart! You have been very helpful!

After screwing it in, did you notice any actual movement between the adapter and head? If the adapter was loose enough to rattle, it typically would result in some noticeable movement between the two (even if it were a knock off).

Yes. A bad screw is a possibility. But people generally tend to just use the screw that's in the head and don't usually change it out when they get a new adapter.

If the screw was tight, the adapter/shaft didn't have any play, and you heard a rattle, it was something in the shaft tip or the shaft isn't fully seated and some epoxy, piece of a tip weight, or trash is rattling around in the adapter.

Stuart G is absolutely correct. You have two different "styles." Pre and Post RBZ Stage 2. The Green or Red (or blue, black, et. al. on aftermarket non-OEM) adapters fit the RBZ, R11S, and R11. The Post S2 adapters fit the R1, SLDR, RBZ Stage 2, M1, M2, M3, and M4.

In each group you have different sizes (.350" and .335" for drivers/fairways and .370 for hybrids) with different adjustability depending on the adapter (1° on some tour issued, 1.5°, or 2°.)

Taylormade Sim2 10.5° (turned down to 9°) - Tensei White 60 stiff

Ping G400 3 and 5 Woods - Diamana D+ Limited 70 stiff

Ping G400 22° Hybrid - Diamana D+ 90 Stiff

Ping i200 5-UW - Modus Tour 105 stiff

Vokey SM4 54° and 58° - DGS-300
