Finding a club builder (not a fitter)

I'm not sure if this a universal issue, or just me, but i've gotten really frustrated with some of the work from the big box stores in my area. I'm not going to call them out, but its to a point where i don't trust their club work at all. this past Saturday, during a qualification event, my driver hosel became un-epoxied and flew off the shaft. Fine, stuff happens. Then I looked in the adaptor and it was clear-as-glass smooth. No roughing at all. Same with the end of the new shaft i put in there. The same store also allegedly tweaked my lofts and lies but when i checked with an older player who knew how to use the machine at my club they were way off (like, not close).

 

In addition, i've messed with my own clubs myself, so there are some issues there. For example, i love my two wedges, they are perfect, but they don't have ferrules. The clubs are perfectly functional, they just look weird. i'd like to have them re-assembled with ferrules.

 

i know what i want in my bag. I know the shafts, lies, lofts, lengths, etc... for every club including putter.

 

1. Is there a good way to find a reliable club builder in a particular area? i checked BBB and google, nothing. Plenty of places who fit, but they don't build (they order, i called and asked a bunch).

 

2. Are there any services where i can ship my clubs out with very detailed instructions, pay a rate, and get them built that way. I would much much rather spend some decent coin getting my j40s put together well (my 5 iron, for example, has a quarter inch hosel and all the rest have half-inch). Has anyone done this? I'd love to ship my sticks off and use backups for a week or ten days and pay a company that can reliably really build my clubs well, from driver through putter.

 

if this isn't an issue for anyone else i can understand that, but its frustrating me and i was wondering if anyone had dealt with finding a builder (not a fitter) before.

If you give a general area im sure golfwrx could point you to a few options. Im lucky my ma and pa store has a few guys that do good work

Try the Wishon directory. I'm 3-for-3 with the guys I've found there in the eight years I've been playing. Two had full-service shops in their garages and one had a big trailer at a course. All nice guys who did impeccable work and also taught me a lot.

 

Personally, I wouldn't go the second route unless it was someone I had already dealt with in person.

Would love any recommendations to guys who can take my set down and then build it back up really well (matching ferrules through set, correct length/lie/loft, matching new grips all installed label up, shaft graphics all down, etc.. etc...)
