ill be in the bay area in early october and wanted to do an overnight with 2 days of golf with a couple buddies i grew up with. we'd be driving from the peninsula. wanted to play friday, stay overnight, then play saturday. originally wanted to play cache creek 2 days and then have fun at the casino but they dont rent out rooms on friday nights only monday-thursday. other places that come to mind are silverado and tahoe but i dont know if tahoe will be open in october for golf. is there any other place that im not thinking of that would be a good time? kind of leaning tahoe on friday stay overnight there and then play yocha dehe (cache creek) on the way back but im open to other ideas. looking for value that wont break the bank so we will be passing on pebble/spyglass recs.

Define break the bank?

Pasatiempo is always one of my top recs and at full boat of $250 still worth it. October usually means aeration time up there so might be able to snag an aeration deal or golf now deal.

Budget with epic views = Pacific Grove, timed so your playing the back nine near sunset. Best $50ish you will probably ever spend on golf.

Budget with a Challenge Bayonet or Blackhorse

Overpriced but has views HMB Ocean think they're around $150 course is just OK but it sits up on a bluff overlooking the pacific

Its a shame about Yocha Dehe not allowing you to book a room during the weekend. I just played there this past weekend and the course was in fantastic condition and a great bang for the buck value. Casino was stacked too. Might be worth finding a spot in nearby Woodland or even Davis to crash and play there anyway? Carmel Valley Ranch has some stay and play options that might fit the bill, but I'd take the course at Yocha over going there. Tahoe that time of year can be hit or miss, I'd try planning something more down in the valley/bay.

Seems like you also want to gamble some. You could go to Graton Hotel And Casino, golf at Rooster Run GC, Foxtail GC, Oakmont GC.

I see that you're in Hawaii, are you on Hawaii Island because it looks like the Signature 15th at Mauna Lani in your avatar?

thanks those look like some other great options if tahoe gets some early snow. im on maui but my friend has a house in mauna lani so we do a trip there every memorial day weekend. we took the drone last time and got some great shots. lots of fun in the lava

I have two cousins that live on Maui. We were at the Mauna Lani last April and have been there many times. We stay at Mauna Lani Point and always get an ocean view room condo. Which complex does your friend own a home? I have 3 friends on Hawaii Island one in Kona and 2 in Hawi. You may have heard of one, his name is John Keawe a famous slack key master.

We usually don't get snow that early here in Tahoe but frost delays are pretty common early October. That time of year is dead around her so you could just wing it and make reservations a few days before, weather dependant. Tahoe mountain club should still be open so it's a good time to play old greenwood and greys crossing at a reduced rate. You could always just have a back up plan and stay in Auburn and play Turkey and dark horse or continue up over the hill to Reno and stay/play red hawk

Bodega bay on the Sonoma coast is another option. Play Northwoods on your way up.

i cant remember the name but its the gated community that you drive past between 3 and 4 on the north course. makes for easy beer runs

Maybe either the Villages or Fairway Villas which are both close to Foodland. The Mauna Lani Resort will close in October for one year of renovation.

nah its pauoa beach homes. if you walk on the beach path between the fairmont and mauna lani resort you walk by it, its on the water.

im realizing tahoe is pretty far and now thinking somewhere in sonoma, napa or maybe bodega bay, staying the night and then playing yocha dehe. kinda throwing the casino idea out the window. chardonnay golf club looks decent and good value. silverado is the more famous one but doesnt look that special. any insight into napa/ sonoma courses? bodega looks good pretty far out there. looking for around a 100$ a round.

also stoked bc I'm going to spend the first part of my trip up in mammoth at my moms and will get a round in there so it will be worth it for me to bring my sticks.

Play Dark Horse in Auburn and Turkey Creek in Lincoln and go to Cache Creek casino with the money you save. Fun courses, usually in decent shape.

Replace Cache Creek with Thunder Valley as it's much closer.

Yes you are right. Thunder Valley is a good casino with active poker room and nearby the two courses i mentioned. Don't know why I said Cache Creek ...casino pretty much sucks and golf course is way over-rated, IMO

Well i feel like i should give an obligatory follow up since everyone went out of their way to offer suggestions for my trip and i appreciate it. had a great trip. first part flew into reno and drove down to mammoth (mom lives there). was suppose to play Sierra Star the last day of the season at mammoth but they got an early storm and the course closed a day early than scheduled. it was 38 degrees out though so i dont think i would have had much fun anyways haha. ended up driving down to Bishop and played bishop country club for 45$. enjoyed myself it was a fun little track. then flew into the bay area for the second part of my trip. we drove up on a friday from the peninsula 2 to yocha dehe. course was in great shape but wow did we get backed up. it was awful waited 10 minutes every shot not sure if it was the greens being too fast or too close a tee times but it sucked, esp since I was DD. after our 5-5.5 hour round (seems silly when the carts all promote "troon values your time") we drove up to south lake tahoe. Lost a lot of money but had fun on the south shore. Had a 1000 am tee time at the last day at edgewood. Weather was perfect sunny and had a great time, I loved playing in the pine trees. After the round we drove back to the bay and went out in the city. overall was a great time. both courses were in great shape although it was a bummer yocha dehe took to so long.
