Iron shafts

I played last minute today with a set of irons that aren't mine. I normally play stiff shafts in my irons, but my buddy's set I used today were regular flex. I was overdrawing/hooking irons shots like I never have before. Is that caused by the flex being wrong, or just a bad day? I'm not the best ball striker, I usually score mid 90s

Lots of possibilities, sorry but not enough details to pin it down to anything in particular.

 

There is no standard for flex so without knowing the specific shaft models (both for yours and your buddies clubs) there is no telling how much different the stiffness were. For such results I'm more likely to suspect a weight issue (shaft weight or swing weight) rather than a flex issue but the bottom line is that there are lots of possibilities on how the clubs could be different that might cause such a result: Shaft stiffness profile, shaft weight, swing weight, something about the different heads (like the amount of offset), even a difference in grip size. Or any combination of those could be adding up to give the results you got.
