I Broke 100 Today

Ok.. I know this probably isn't all that great for some of you..

Broke 100 this afternoon, with a score of 99. Weather was absolutely gorgeous today (northern Maryland). I was playing at the Oakmont Greens in Hampstead, Maryland.

Played from the white tees... Was probably playing at around 6400 yards today with some of the tees pushed back .. Course is rated 70.6 with a Slope of 125 from the White tees.

Hit 4/14 fairways, a 3/18 GIR, 38 putts (yeah.. I know.. horrible)

I just started back up with golf in June when the wife let me get some clubs for Fathers Day. I previously had a 12 year break from the game, so I'm almost like a beginning hacker, all over again :)

Took a couple of lessons this summer.. before the lessons, i wouldn't hit any fairways, as I would fade all of my drives to the right in the tall grass most of the time.

Today was odd, as I wasn't scared to pull out the driver.

But damn.. If I could just get a little more consistancy. When I take my time with setup, address and basic fundamentals, its almost 100% given a decent shot. I know sometimes I get rushed out on the course and fall astray from all that I've been taught.

Congratulations! I remember when I broke the century mark, it was very very satisfying at the time.

Keep up having fun.

Remember, even the pros do not hit every fairway, learn to scramble to get a higher GIR.

You obviously know that you need to work on your shot game, a good short game will put your scores in the 80's in no time.

Congrats buddy :)

I've done it last year (3rd year) and it happened at my last game (98, mid November) :cheesy: I try to break 90 this year (93), but I don't play as much as I would like to (didn't reach the 20 games yet :cheesy: ) and winter is coming soon

Again, good "work", your confidence will grow up! :bad:

Congrats. I just broke 100 for the first time this year yesterday. Hopefully we can both break 90 by the end of the year. For me it was deciding to actually spend some time with the game. More time on the range getting my drive fixed. Oh, I also was hitting new clubs(Mizuno mx-900, my old ones were worn out knockoffs), and a new brand of ball (Calloway warbirds, old was Nike distance sft), and teeing up a lil bit higher. Between all that I droped about 10 strokes off my score to shoot a 93.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Hopefully the weather plays nice for us and we have a decent fall; would still have a couple of months to improve and drop a few more strokes before the winter break hits us.

The wife bought a net so now I can just go out back and swing the golf club.. over and over again.. hopefully this will help me develop a more repeatable, consistant swing.

I'm taking a different approach to the game this go around, versus the way I took the game 12 years ago. I'm now not going to get so worked up over when I hit bad shots. I used to become furious. Now that I'm "older" and wiser, I've learned that getting worked up and furious over your game is only going to make it worse. Its just more added stress and handicaps your mental ability to the game. Need to learn to keep a clear mind and take one shot at a time.

Good for you man! Having goals is VERY important to improving your game, whether its to break 100 or 80 for the first time. Go work on the short game a bit and you'll be breaking 90 in no time!!!!

Thanks! :)

Actually my short game isn't all that bad. When I'm 120 yards an in, I am just so much more confident and know I can put it on the green. Its getting up to that point that I lose strokes. When I'm outside of 150 yards, that is when I lose it. My score of 99 consisted of a few holes where I had to take a penalty stroke due to the trees swallowing my ball up  Quite a few of my second shots were really shot #3 which is unfortunate, but that is the way it goes I guess.

So, my long game and putting are what really need the most work. The beauty of golf though is there are no deadlines to meet and I don't have to answer to anyone about my progress; only myself.

Nice round. I am a novice golfer myself, and I recently broke 100 for the first time about a month ago. Yesterday I shot a 94 on a course where the greens had just been aerated and sanded. Probably could have shot 91-92 at least if the greens had been in good shape, but that's golf.

Breaking 100 is a great barrier to hit, and once you have done it, it seems to get easier and easier to do. The crazy think is that after breaking 100, if you go and shoot a 101 you will be so ticked off. It's only a 2 stroke difference, but the mental difference is huge!

Here's to you (and me) breaking 90 before the end of the season!
