Playing North Berwick on Friday, where should I play Thursday?

Winterfield Golf Club near Dunbar is a true links course and doesn't get a lot of love or attention, at least compared with most of the other links courses in the area. Probably would pass it by, but it just so happens it will be having a mixed pairs greensomes competition when we are in East Lothian. I'd seen they had one last year (and it seems clubs repeat those comps generally on the same weekends each year based on looking that stuff up the last couple of years) and emailed the pro shop and got an email saying "yes" they will have it again this year and "look forward to seeing you" SO my wife and I will play a little 18 hole comp on a Saturday. Very inexpensive way of playing the course (not an expensive course to play anyway), looks to have some great views and a perfect, fun little track for the two of us to fool around on for a day. Not on the club website officially for a couple of weeks but will be looking for that entry form! Love the hospitality over there.
Not only that, you'll probably play with locals, and meet a few more before and after the round. Have a blast!

When I played at North Berwick I asked the manager that welcomes you if The Glen was worth playing.."don't bother" he said. "Not really a links and clay based". Tom Coyne rates it really highly, Tom Doak doesn't. I'm sure many enjoy it. Happy that I played Gullane #1 and NB twice, one of my favorite courses anywhere.

I absolutely agree with the bit I underlined. On the other hand, the Glen is MUCH more scenic than North Berwick. Its MUCH less expensive. And its fun to play. Its not the best course around, and you didn't go wrong by playing at Gullane, but if you're looking for something a little less demanding, and a little less expensive, the Glen is a great option.

I would plop for Gullane 2 & 3, Musselburgh, Kilspindie and even Braid Hills before ever considering The Glen. It might be a different story if The Glen was cheap and cheerful as in years past, but for £60+ a game...naah. Besides, it has one of the worst opening holes in golf. I think this is a case of why 18 holes can sometimes be detrimental to design. If The Glen could be a 9 or whatever hole course, it would be better.
