9 Handicappers swing..Please Critique

9 handicap, pretty average player all around.

6' 1" 180 lbs

Driver SS ~98-100 @85%

I've been blocking a lot of shots right lately, and I really am open to suggestions. Am I getting too much forward sway causing me to open up early and block it?

Thanks

Yes try to think of your self rotating over your left leg not trying to push through it at impact. you are swaying hard which will make solid contact very very hard. and cause pushed shots because you are out of sequence with your body and your arms.

So I have early extension? What are some good drills to help with this?

Not a believer in Stack and Tilt garbage, but if I were to make a suggestion, it would be to stay(what will feel like)more centered on your backswing. You move quite a bit off of the ball and then past the ball prior to impact. This will be block city.

You make an athletic move, but are a bit out of position.

First comment is I really would like to see you get your chin off your chest. This will help with your turn going back.

The simple answer to your problem is you get ahead of it just a little.

I was taught a long time ago a fancy term called The Conservation of Angular Motion. Simply stated that means that sooner or later the club head catches up with the hands and passes the body

Thats really simply all I want you to work on letting your hands and arms pass your body. The one planers will think I am crazy but its all you need right now.

Just quit letting your body race ahead so much and let your arms and hands pass.

Two drills to try. One is to hit some balls with your feet dead together heels and toes touching. I suggest you use like a seven iron.

If you normally hit the ball say 150 with a seven iron I only want you trying to hit these 120 to 130 Just swing the club and let it release past your body.

This drill can be hard at first. If you find yourself badly off balance hit a few balls with your feet apart trying to hit them the same distance but never let your right heel leave the ground and let your arms and hands pass your body

Golf can be very simple if you just swing the club.

Agree with most of the above comments. You simply slide past impact. I get this way after the hooks enter my brain ... like I'm coming out of it to hold off the draw/hook.

It's good to get a variety of comments on the same thing. One thought or comment may click with you and you're off and running. I tend to visualize a stacked left side at impact (right side for me- southpaw). I need to feel that my lead arm and leg are extended and stacked at impact.

My drill is hitting short irons with my feet together - can't slide that way. I follow it with a standard feet apart set up, feet together in the backswing and then step into the shot. You'll post up and release left of the target without manipulation.

Sorry to be long winded ... I'm no instructor so I tend to overexplain. Oh one more thing ... stop hitting 2 irons ;)

I think the others above are onto something, you do look like you sway through impact a bit.

However, I think I see something else that no one has mentioned yet. You look like you flip the club through impact. Its hard to tell without being able to go frame by frame, but it looks like your left wrist might be breaking down a little bit. The other possibility is that you are not extending your right side through impact. Again, it is hard to tell without frame by frame. If you can, though, compare your swing to a pro who's swing you would like to emulate, freezing both swings at various points to see the differences.

Hope this helps, and at least gives you something to think about.

Thank you for the replies. I will do the feet together drill and focus on trying to keep my lower body more still.

When I uploaded the swing on the internet, it degraded the video, so it won't let you see frame by frame. On my computer however, I can go frame by frame and see that the left arm and shaft are in a straight line at impact. True though, watching the posted video gives you the impression that the club may be slightly ahead of the hands at impact.

This first picture the ball placement gives a little illusion, but this ball has already been struck and is going away from me. In this swing, the ball was acutally placed out of sight behind the yellow bucket of balls.

This is the best frame to impact picture I could get with the 30fps video I captured.

Weight a little back towards yoiur heels would probably help - better balance, easier to shallow out a bit.

I love these still pics notice the masked man thing I keep talking about with your chin and your left arm.

I still say your body is moving hard left to fast. I hope you do the drills and do them a lot. They will shallow you out and make you come from behind the ball.

Chin up now

Ken

Thanks Ken. I will make the drills part of my routine practice.

First I see you have weak grip with your left hand, at the top your face is closed and into the downswing your sternum and head is ahead of the ball at impact. If you are closed at the top you will need a aggressive rotation with the lowerbody to get to square at impact and stay behind the ball. It looks like you move forward with your upper body to pull the club down into the ball try to get the lower body moving first it will keep you behind the ball. You are holding on because you are ahead of the ball, if you stay behind the ball at impact you will release the club and not hold on. Try a couple of practice swings and as the clubhead reaches the bottom activly release the club feel your right hand go over your left, you will see that you stay behind the ball. Thy some practice swings and try to keep your right heel on the ground longer it will help to stay behind and release the club. Jim
