Right hand slips at impact...

regrip?

Hi all...

I've been practising my golf for about a month now (driving range only) using a set of RH Skymax Ice IX-1 steel shafted irons (6i - SW).

Recently i've noticed that at impact my right hand has a tendency to slip a little, sending the ball off target. I'm swinging the club within myself so i don't think i'm going at the ball too hard.

Also, although i have medium sized hands i'd say, the grip feels a little thin. I'm wondering whether i might benefit from a re-grip to something like this Golf Pride Jumbo Tour Velvet Grip which appears to be thicker?

The grip on my Alien Tour Wedge is thicker and it feels and handles great. I think something like that on my irons could be a solution.

With your advice, i might get one club re-gripped and give it a try.

Any thoughts?

Are you hitting the ball off the toe a lot? Toe hits can cause the face to twist easily.

I should also mention that i'm noticing this more towards the end of the practice session so perhaps hand fatigue has something to do with it as well?

 

Nevertheless, the grip still feels a touch thin IMHO.

In the case of anything slipping, that would be the first sign to regrip.

This may seem obvious but it is worth checking your grip mechanics and style. At the beginning of this season I made a change, after many years, from an interlocking to an overlapping grip (I hope I got those terms right). In a nutshell, this affects how my right little finger and left index finger mesh.

 

As a result, my grip and swing and ball flight is way more consistent. I can grip the club lighter, and yet it feels more secure. Depending on how long you've been playing, this might be something to look at. Until I made this change, I frequently felt like my right hand was coming loose right about when I was making contact with the ball.

That's what i'm experiencing. I've only been playing for a month so very much a newbie. The next time i'm at the range i'll hit fewer balls (say 50 as opposed to 100) to see how much hand fatigue is a factor.

Definitely, fatigue factor is most likely.

Don't go to a jumbo grip, unless you have huge hands or arthritis in your fingers. A medium size grip, or simply double or triple wrap the tape under the grip would do the same job.

right hand should never feel the need to grip the club hard, I'd worry more if my left hand grip is slipping ( being a right handed golfer ).

Someone pointed out the following Grip Size Chart... based on the measurements i've just taken my grip size is Mens Std + 2 tape wraps (possibily 3).

One thing you may consider also is the add an extra layer or 2 on the part of the grip that only your right hand is on. Some people have said this works for them as it helps from the right hand taking over too much in their grip

If you've only been playing about a month, you definitely should get a pro to look at how you are holding the club and make sure you've got sound grip mechanics (your hands, not the grip on the club). If you get your grip and setup right, everything else will be so much easier. You may fiddle around with your swing your whole life, but a small investment now in grip and setup will stay with you forever.

Well, i went for it and hand my 6i-8i regripped... they are 'Tour Match' grips and are noticeably bulkier than the original grips on the Skymax. I'll see what difference they make.

 

Also, i tried a Hybrid club this weekend (hit about 75 balls) and the combination of the graphite shaft and hitting off the tee considerably reduced any hand fatigue/ache.

 

I'm still sticking with steel shafts with my current irons though.

hmm, I'm not sure if that's what's twisting the club in your hand. Have your lie angles checked as you may be hitting your clubs a bit heavy on the toe. If you are hitting off the matt at the driving range, are the burn marks from the matt even across the leading edge, or are the thinker towards the toe and clean towards the heel?

 

As for grip pressure, my right hand is just barely holding on to the club with 80% of my pressure from the pinkie and ring finger of my left hand. This really helps me release the club thru impact.

 

There is definitely some merit to getting new grip (new grips are always good) and thicker grips, but I'm not sure if that will make a night and day difference. Thinner grips typical help with release where thicker helps hold off the release. Either way, if the lie angles are correct and you are hitting it in the center of the face, nothing should be twisting.

 

At least, that's how my instructor taught me.

Get one of those hand squeezer at almost every office supply stores and use it to streghten your fingers and hands, and forearm.

It'll show results in weeks.
