Rustic Canyon... go play it now!

After the wet winter in So Cal, the hills around Rustic are all kinds of shades of green. On a sunny day with this much green, this is about as good as it gets on daily fee in LA area....

 

I am so taken with Rustic that I bought a senior pass, even though it's 50 miles, 1+ hrs from where I live, with the commitment to play at least 2-3 times/month there.

 

If you are local and haven't played it yet, I obviously recommend. Four things really stand out to me. First, the fairways are wide, but then again, there is enough malicious stuff like little pot bunkers and strategic stuff about where to approach greens from split fairways that there's more to it than the wide open spaces. Two, the green complexes - the greens and the closely mown areas are huge, giving you all kinds of ways to putt, chip, pitch when you miss the green, but on most greens, the huge size is misleading as the greens are really a buch of small segments (from the different levels, slopes) so your approach shot is very demanding and you need to understand what is needed. The bunkers and waste areas can be big trouble. Three, a lot of holes are not real dramatic looking and kinda feel the same, but there's more subtlety once you understand them - and the short holes (3's and 4's) are fun. Four, where else can you play golf in LA area and not hear any machine sounds or not see developed property? (Front 9 at rush hour you can hear freeway and there are a couple of buildings atop one surrounding hiil - but that's it).

 

Anyway, just thought I'd mention that right now is a great time to go play Rustic, if you can...

I'm dying to get up there soon. Being in down in Orange County, I have no excuses for not having played it yet!

The obvious hazard at RC is the freeway system. It took me 45 minutes to drive there and 3 hours to come back. My strong rec is to drop down through Topanga Canyon to the coast road. Beautiful scenery but a winding road which was worth it for a visitor like me. If you are stuck in traffic it was at least pleasant to be looking at the Pacific.

sweet. i was already leaning towards playing there. Anyone have any idea how busy/slow it plays on weekends? My parents live in Westlake Village, so thinking of tacking on some golf while I'm visiting since Rustic is quite close.

Agree with Wmblake.

 

Have played Rustic along with Oak Quarry, the two Pelican Hill courses, Rancho Park, Robinson Ranch (Valley), Riviera, Saticoy, Sherwood, Trump Palos Verdes, & Valencia.

 

You can likely guess which was my favorite, but Rustic Canyon was second on the list.

 

Admittedly I'm a links fan, but Rustic's conditioning, serenity of its location, & tough greens were so much fun.
