squaring the club face

HI,

i have been golfing for 3 years and have worked on my swing alot i have a good swing motion. i have a good shoulder turn /hip turn clearing my hips and keeping my head on the ball. just its hard for me to square the club face at impact. when all is going well iam usually a good golfer hiiting everything dead straight. some days ill go to the range and hit everything straight then the next day ill have trouble getting everything straight .arm rotaion is my biggest problem, my forarms sometimes roll over and hook the ball left. it is hard for me to tell if the club face is square at impact, usually I do my practice swing and check if its square at impact then hit the ball and hopefully is square when i hit the ball.

 

 

I just want to know how you guys or if theres an actual way of knowing or feeling that the head is square at the impact area.do myou guys know good drills to work on during the winter

With respect you have learned the game backwards and need to go back to the beginning. You need to first learn to control the swinging of the club and the squaring of the face with the hands and arms. Once you can find the ball with a square freely swinging club head, then you should start to worry about shoulder turn, hip turn and all of the other things you do well without squaring the club face. As you know by now, a good shoulder turn and great hip rotation aren't worth spit if you don't find the ball with a square club face.

 

My suggestion for rapid improvement. Go to the range and start hitting balls with the feet together. Start with half shots and work up to full swings. Your mission is to swing the club with the hands and arms allowing the body to respond. Don't let the body cominate the swinging motion. Do this until you can strike the ball solidly with a little bit of draw. Then start to spread the feet and if you must start thinking about shoulder turn and hip rotation. For the vast majority of golfers however the body should react to the swinging of the club, not cause the swinging of the club.

 

If you get to the point where you are striking the ball solidly but with more draw than you like it's time to add a little deliberate body action to bring the draw under control or even to produce a fade. All of this depends however on your ability to swing the club with the hands and arms and find the ball with a square club face

Practice short chip and pitch shots and concentrate on getting your left wrist flat at impact. Do it enough times to start to "educate" your hands on the correct position at impact

 

This works wonders. I hit a few dozen 20-30yd. pitch shots with my 58* to warm up. Sometimes with the Gap or PW as well. Gives a really good feeling for squaring and letting the loft of the club do it's job.

 

 

well we all have different opinions here. I would check my golf grip first then if I was sure my grip was right I would find out if the club is square at the top of the backswing.

Very important. I wasn't too bad to start but a pro got me square at the top and at impact with a slight grip change. I most definitely do not try to manipulate anymore. It squares itself if it's square at the top IMO.

As a 13 handicap, perhaps you can relate to me. When I'm hitting the ball left or right in an inconsistent manner, it usually comes down to two things.

 

One, I have lost my tempo and my arms and body are not working together in a smooth easy way with good footwork and weight transfer.

 

Or two, my position at the top is inconsistent. For me, no matter what club I am hitting or whether I am doing full swings with longer clubs or 3/4 swings with short irons and wedges, at the top I like to feel my wrist "setting" and the clubface at about 45 degrees to the sky. Just a very slight pause, then I start on down. In other words, be sure to "complete" the backswing.

this is exactly right, and one of the best drills for me at least. I started with my 8 iron and feet together. I know from playing that my 8 iron will give me 160 yards with a full out swing, but I don't want to hit that hard, but at least this is my limit. Starting with my feet together taking very small slow swings, almost pitches, I got 70 yards, then 80 yards, then 100 yards. Soon enough, I found that even a very slow but methodical and precise connect would give me 140 yards. Then I took that tempo and went to a normal posture and ended up at a nice easy 145 yards that I can rely on. The first think I do when my swing gets weird is go back to the feet together drill. you cannot overswing like this or you'll fall down. It also simplifies the path to make better contact.
