Atlanta for work conference next week - squeeze in one round

Hello, coming to Atlanta next week and looking to play a round Monday, May 20. Was planning renting a car for day or Uber (staying near world congress center) and heading to Bears Best. Looks like no morning tee times available. So then looked at Echelon based on research here, but recent reviews on golf advisor are bad. Thinking about within an hour of hotel. Suggestions??? Thanks.

If you want something close, check out Bobby Jones. It’s in incredible shape right now. I played there with a buddy last week who said their greens were in better shape than East Lake, which he had played at in an outing recently. Downside is that it’s only 9 holes so you’d have to play it twice to get 18 holes. It’s playing fast and firm right now.

Echelon's not one of my favorites, it's almost just too hard to enjoy for 1 round. There's a lot of good courses up towards Kennesaw, Woodstock, and Canton; I think the options are better north than south. I'm north about 45 min and there's good courses everywhere, not too many that I wouldn't recommend. I'd take a look at Woodmont, Bridgemill, Legacy on Lanier, Cobblestone, or Eagle Watch. I'm know Eagle Watch is clubcorp, don't think any of the others are.

I haven't played Echelon recently, so I can't speak on the current conditions, but I don't really agree with it being too difficult to enjoy for one round. Play the tee box best suited for your game and maybe you shoot a couple over your normal score. I'm scoring 79-85 range on avg) and I've broken 90 everytime I've played it. But it's conditions are not good, it's too expensive to consider right now.

For what you're facing...(staying downtown) I wouldn't be afraid to go south. Wolf Creek is a very nice track, about 25-30 mins. The Woodmont choice is a good one if you're going north.

I would recommend making the ride out to Athens to play the UGA course. Definitely worth the drive, especially if you’re renting a car.
