... let's say you get an oil can sm 58* retail wedge and get a grind like sergio's from joe ... is sergio's still better? ... feel-wise? wy is it better ... difference between tour and retail ... does tour feel like forged?

really curious ...

First off, there is no retail oil can spin milled wedges. I will list a few differences between tour and retail below:

Tour wedges have superior finishes as apposed to the retail wedges. The "TC" stamped wedges have an awesome thick satin finish that not only looks great, but holds up better than the retail. Lots of the tour satin vokey's also have copper underlay, which makes them feel softer than the retail wedges

Secondly, tour wedges are generally MUCH heavier than retail wedges. It is not uncommon to get a tour lob wedge that swingweights in the D6-D7 range. They made the wedges extra heavy, so custom grinding can be done, and you will still acheive a respectable swingweight.

Most tour wedges also have "tour grooves" These grooves are wider and deeper than the retail wedges. The increased width and sharpness of the edges of the grooves provides more spin and bite around the greens.

Are tour wedges better? That is a question only you can answer. It all depends on your game, and what you are looking to gain. If you are a high spin player with a steep swing, you probably dont need tour grooves. If you have a flat swing which doesnt generate alot of spin like myself, tour grooves are nice to have to get that extra bite. If you take a retail wedge and grind it, you will probably have to use a tip weight to get the swingweight back where it used to be. Also, grinding will expose the raw metal which will rust. You could either strip the chrome and have a raw wedge, or refinish the wedge again in satin.

PM me is you have any further questions!

Hope this helps,

Steve

Am I alone in thinking that is pretty harsh on joe public? Why don't they provide the people who pay their bills with the better grooves at least? Grrrr.

The oil can finish will quickly wear off the sole of the wedge anyway, so the grind will blend in well....It will work well for grinding..

Tour vs Retail Vokey Spin Milled = not always a good thing.

The main problem with wedges designed for so much spin is them being used in "non-tour" conditions.

I played with a buddy in a fall scramble who had just picked up a few new Vokey SM wedges at the NW event in Utah.

Of course, they held the greens nicely on concrete-like tour greens, giving him the performance he was looking for on tour but when it came to playing back home in non-tour conditions (read softer greens) he was spinning the ball so much that it was ridiculous. He had a hard time controlling shots distance-wise and he couldn't access tight pin positions as easily as "mere mortals" playing non-tour grooved wedges.

Right after this he went and got a back-up set with a less aggressive groove pattern to use when the conditions were soft. Lesson learned by all. Especially for those guys around the club who thought they should be playing tour grooved wedges.

TOUR wedges are heavier. Like the other post mentioned and have more aggressive grooves. Yes, the chrome is better on the tour wedges than the retail ones.

Again, like the other poster mentioned, there is much customization on TOUR for wedges. They need to be heavier to achieve this.

As for the Oil Can Spin Milled's, no they are not retail........ YET! Next year.

(FWIW... If you order your wedges through custom, you can get some heavier stuff.)

I have to chime in here....this tour vs retail is really out of control....if one thinks they can get a tour item and be a tour player they are kidding themselves. Get some good equip, play this game, take lessons and get better. As for wedges, you can get a vokey done like the pros the c2 finish..however i know pros who had retail spin milled and played at pga tour events and they loved them....thinking that your gonna see this big difference is nonsense...remember there is a guy on another site who had everyone paying all this money for y cutters and look now they are 125 dollars retail...in fact if you want y cutters go to a sponsor at tourspec...paul at shrev golf..he will cut y cutters and they are the bomb!! my 2 cents.....

My experience is that the grooves on some of my tour wedges were a bit more pronounced and finishes are at times different. Also you can get different degrees of loft that aren’t available in retail. One big thing is special grinds you can get for the better players that the OEM's don’t have in their retail lines.

I have had a set of tour Vokey's now for 3 seasons. I am waiting for these suckers to wear down. I personally think the grooves are too aggressive. It shreds the ball on full swings and I just don’t need the extra spin. 4 rows of debris hanging off of brand new Pro v1x is a bummer. Anyway I was told by Champx2 once to save my money and go out and buy some retail wedges and play golf. My game isn’t at a level that would require real sophisticated grinds and low bounce.

I didn’t, but it was good advice anyway. I will learn.

I use a regular Spin Milled Vokey and they tear the cover off of pro v's as well. I think the solution is to just get a tour issue 60 degree vokey. If you think about it do you really need all that extra spin for your other wedges?
