Ping ?s

Ok, I'm coming from out of the shadows to make my first post.

I'm looking at getting some of the new G5 irons. I found out through a partial fitting that I'm a blue dot. Now, my questions are mainly about shafts and swingweight.

I've always liked a heavier feeling club - I love the feel of the MacGregor M675 and they're a D3 swingweight. I also liked the feel of the MP-32 that a friend had. Unfortunately, I would probably hurt someone while trying to hit balls with these anywhere but into a net. Both of those clubs had DG S300 shafts. Would I get that same heavy feeling if I ordered the G5s with this shaft, or should I order a lighter shaft and specify a heavier swingweight?

Along those lines, Ping offers the DG, but what's the deal on their other shafts. That cushin insert. Is that like sensicore? I thought I remembered reading that the Z-Z65 shaft was good. Anyone had any experience with these?

Thanks for the help. Jason

The Cushin inserts are inserts in the shafts core that dampen vibrations at impact. In my experience I have found them good shafts. If specifying a heavier shaft I would consider your ballflight as a heavier shaft will tend to lower your ball flight. The Z-Z65 is indeed very good to but plays like a stiff so a clubhead speed with your driver of around 95-105 MPH would, in my opinion, be reccomended. Good luck with your selection. I'm sure you won't be dissapointed. The G5 is an excellent iron.

I was testing both the I5 and G5 in the moniter/simulator thing at a Golf Galaxy. The guy said that I definitely didn't need any help getting the ball up. My trajectory was just a bit lower with the I5, but not a big difference. Main reason I think I'll choose the G5 is for the forgivness on off days. He never mentioned swing speed, but he said my ball speed was 100 and that was with a six iron. Come to think of it, I the irons I was hitting said true temper on the shaft, so would that have been the DG?

Someone on another thread had mentioned going with a combo set of i5s and G5s. Doing like a set of 3-6 G5 and 7-PW of the i5.

15° Titleist TSi2 HZRDUS Smoke RDX 70 6.0

I had thought about the combo set, too. Still am, as a matter of fact. The salesman was trying to feed me a line about how there would be an extra charge to do that. I told him that I thought you could buy Ping irons by the iron and he said "I'll have to check." He was wrong.

Anyway, the combo set seems like it would be nice. I have Orlimar SF 302s now, which are much "Bladier" than either the G5 or I5 and I like hitting knock downs and stuff w/ the 8-9. Would that be difficult to do with the short irons of a G5 set since there's the great deal of offset and such wide sole?

I am playing the i5's with the ZZ-65 and they are a good combo. I got mine soft stepped once, mainly for feel. They will give you the lower trajectory. Also, I got mine at d4.

The following is JMHO you understand. If I were going to "drop the nickel", so to speak, on a new set of irons where you really have all sort of ordering options, I would go to whomever is going to get them for me and get their demo irons with the shafts you think you might like and take them to the course and play them. Buying blind just never seems to work for me. I too am thinking about ordering new irons and they will definitely be Pings. When I do, I will get fitted and I want to try out all the various shafts. I currently play with I3 Blades with the JZ Cushin shafts and I love the feel. The I3s are my 7th set of Ping irons.

Wow. Soft stepped. Um, what's that mean?

Must be rough getting to go try the clubs out on the course at anytime. I think that here in Ohio I'm probably stuck inside or at a heated range for the next few months. I totally agree with what you are saying, but I think I'd like to have the clubs for all my winter "practice" as opposed to waiting until spring.
