Adding lead powder to putter

Anyone add lead powder down the shaft to add more weight to a putter? (cut down 1 " and larger grip. Lost 9 swing pts.)

How well does the powder work? Pros and cons?

Unbalanced at all?

Right now there's lead tape on the bottom but its unsightly.

Swing weight scales (and even the swing weight concept) is really not a good way to manage putter weights.

Now head weight certainly is important and so is the relationship between the head weight and total weight and grip weight. But the scale isn't really telling you how they should relate to each other.

But to answer the question, it's not as effective as say lead tape right on the head, but it can do the job. I've even known some people to fill the whole shaft up with shaft to increase the total weight of the club.

I will go ahead and tell you not to do it. Bad idea. I took a SC American Classic Bullseye and put powder down the shaft and also counterweighted it. Made what was previously the greatest pure feeling putter into the worst feeling putter I ever took to a golf course. I always use this comparison but it fits, if you want to feel like you are swinging your putter into wet bags of sand then powder is a good choice. I could not stand the feel and drilled that stuff out as soon as I could. I would duct tape nickels on the back of the club before I went back to tungsten powder.

Just my opinion though.

I did it on an old Odyssey White Hot that I used for years and didn't mind it. I don't remember how much I added to it, but the feel was fine on the putter.

Thanks all for the input.

Ended up making a few adjustment as an experiment.

 

Removed the lead tape from the bottom.

Removed heavier grip and replaced it with a Super Pro Traxion Tour 2.0 (saved 30 grams)

Added some lead tape to the hosel. (can't be noticed at address at all)

 

All in all feels more balanced, feel is better and satisfied with the results...so far ;)

If in the long run I'm happy, I might remove the tape and add the equivalent of powder down the shaft.

At least this way, as suggested, I'll be aware of the feel and balance.
