Iron change questions

So I normally game a set of I25’s with the stock ping stiff shafts. I recently decided to switch back to a half set of the Bridgestone j33 blades I learned to play on and have gained significant distance and accuracy, as well as had that fire re-lit for the game. I’m sure there is a reason why, could anyone explain?

Shafts might be a better fit for you, leading to improved strike and increased distance. The heads could be a better match for your swing creating more ideal launch conditions. Did you notice the height change? You could be ballooning the ping set

Thanks for the reply! I would say net the height is the same, but the short irons in the bridgestones seem to get up quicker while the long irons trajectory is similar it just pierces more. The bstones are s300’s I believe. Thanks again for the feedback

Could be a number of things in the setup... shaft, turf interaction, swing weight... it could be 100% mental. Maybe you picked up the J33s and said, "Man, I like these" and hit a couple good shots... that gave you more confidence and now you feel like you can go after them more... You swing harder without giving up your timing... and all the sudden you are hitting them significantly farther. 

 

I believe playing irons you LIKE and have confidence in is more important than finding the perfect fit... You can make an imperfect fit work (I played a poorly fit set of clubs for 20 years) but you can't make a good swing with a club you don't trust... at least not consistently. 

 

If you are swinging the J33s well, keep gaming them... If you want to figure out how the sausage is made, get both sets of clubs on a launch monitor and see what numbers are changing.

Could be a lie and loft distance as well. Lie angle might be different between the two with the J33s being what you need so you're finding the center of the face. Lofts most likely are a little different as well driving the discrepancy.

 

Also very plausible that it's because of the mental aspect as mentioned previously, or swingweight, or head design, or a combination of a lot of things.

 

If it works, don't fix it.

I applaud the fact You went back to irons that are close to 10 or more years old. I'm going through the same thing currently. I am gaming Callaway xforged from 2007, and I love the looks and the feel. Good for you for going old school. Every manufacturer today has great equipment, however every advertisement says it's the best they've ever made, and we all know that is about marketing. Unfortunately too many people buy into it and have to have the greatest and latest gear. Keep gaming the bridgestones!
