Yardage Books for tournaments

Recommended Posts

Lots of hate on yardage books. 15 years ago not everyone had range finders or gps and would just feel the yardage (or find a sprinkler head and walk it off) that is a lot art too for what its worth. Should we all go back and use blades too? Everything changes. Yardage books help but if you use them correctly. I find them more valuable in terms of approach shots vs putting imo. Or if its a course I haven't played before having the layout especially on the courses with blind or shots you can see the green helps a ton there. A lot of apps are starting to have those. Such as SwingU ect.

I think these books are most useful for lines off the tee and approach shots.  It’s good to know those 1-3 holes where the ball will release on an approach shot, especially if you’ve only played one practice round before a tourney.  On the greens, looking at those arrows will take away from the feel of the putt (speed), IMO.

If you can’t do a practice round (bc the club doesn’t allow them), then the books are well worth the cost, since it is cheaper than the green fee you would pay for the practice round.  I know our local PGA section does a lot of events at country clubs that do not allow practice rounds.

Also, strackaline elevation yardage adjustments have been pretty accurate in our experience…

This is an antiquated way of thinking.

Absolutely not my man. I’ll take the kid who grew up playin with clubs from the 80-90’s over a kid who had state of the art clubs throughout childhood. I guarantee the ladder will win the match if they both start with the same set….I’ll even let you pick the set of clubs

I agree that most of the time, my son's not using Puttview on the greens, esp for local tournaments.

However, for AJGA & amateur events, it's imperative to have these booklets for their approach shoots & for course management.

Also, we've spend over $700 on books over the past 4 years, but it's minimal compared with the cost of going to that tournament (or the cost of not having them).

Lastly, we're not playing as many new courses now so we just use the books from before...so it's a bit of an upfront investment.

P.S. We have decade & I've tried printing but I can never get the format right, plus we like having the greens details.

I prefer my son to use the decade yardage books and take his own notes on slopes. To print the yardage books you have to be able to print on legal size paper. I print pages 1-11 first and then flip them over and print 12-22 on the back. Also helps to have a booklet stapler.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

We dropped our decade sub just recently. Boy is fully committed to the program and believes 100% but there was not enough new content to warrant the expense and for the 7-10 tourney schedule were on just didnt make sense.
