From Adams to Callaway Mavrik - Buyer's Remorse

Hey all,

 

I just recently got fitted for and purchased a set of Callaway Mavrik irons (standard, 4-PW, 2Up Lie Angle). They felt amazing during the fitting and I'm really hoping they can add some length to my game and maybe help knock down my handicap from a 12 to a 10 or less.

 

The new Mavriks are due to be delivered mid-April, I've been playing my Adams Idea a7 set for over a decade. They still feel as good as ever and I get these creeping thoughts of whether or not I should just stick with them for a while longer. The new tech with the Mavriks seems almost like cheating when compared to the a7s, but I've got to get with the times (or maybe I just like making things more difficult in an already difficult game). 

 

Would the Mavriks be too far into the GI irons category or should I have gone with something more in the Player's Distance category? Thanks!

I think you simply need to wait until the callaways arrive. If they were good when you got fit for them, I can't imagine that has changed. 

 

As far as too far into the GI category, I have seen good players with all sorts of irons. I think it really comes down to waiting and seeing how the callaways perform. You may find they far exceed the adams

I played a Member Guest last year with a 1.5 cap rocking Mavriks. His style was a bit sweepy, the club just worked nicely for him as the slightly wider sole did good things. I am a bit steeper and play a players CB, but could easily game them if I wanted to. 

 

Don't give into labels, game it and have fun. If it really doesn't work its due to fitting and how the engineering of the club (sole width, your AoA, etc...) which may not work as well for you. Who cares what its called, if it works it works.

 

I gamed Ping Eye 2 for 20 years and lets be honest by modern labels, they are Gi/SGI. In 1987 they were tour level cavity back. What changed? They hired 4 more into the marketing department is all....

Thanks @bvanlieu and @Flip4000 for the feedback and encouragement. I'm looking forward to them and it's good to know that there are lower handicappers that game them as well. I'll let you know what I think after I get a few swings in!  Have a good one.

I know this is GolfWRX, but there’s a false stigma that you need to move closer to blades as your handicap lowers. There are GI irons that are played on the PGA and LPGA tours. Just use whatever makes the game easier and fun for you.
