I'd like to hear some drills to shorten my backswing

Depth or length?! Interrelated but not the same.

 

If depth is all right a good way to feel length is a hard stop.

1. Stand next to a wall (wall left for right handers)

2. Make a backswing

3. Touch the wall softly with the clubhead due to the bump only in transition. This will separate possible overactive body parts (arms, wrists)

 

If the above drill is too easy; practice the same drill with a narrow pole and touch it; the key is to learn to sense the head in position.

This issue is the demon that lives within me and every time I think I make progress, it comes roaring back.  Its the sole reason I cannot get better than a 7-8 index and remain a very inconsistent player, especially on harder stretches of holes under pressure.  Ironic part is I am an excellent wedge player and have no trouble executing half wedge shots, in fact I thrive at it.  

 

But, mid iron/hybrid in hand from the fairway, I see that target way off and my body reacts with super long quick arm swing and I know I'm dead before the strike.  Might even consider it a full swing yip at this point.  I can't feel where the swing is supposed to end, and feel like I can't hit a 3/4 shot if my life depended on it - but only on the golf course.  The Bender wall drill is a good one, but its a hard thing to do a lot of unless you have a wall handy, and even then its not one you can hit balls with.  But I'll be the first to admit that while Ive made the commitment to the left arm parallel feel for stretches of weeks, but I have not really hand on heart done it for many months and carrying that over to the course in competitive rounds.

Monte's 'Plane and Release by Feel' did it for me.  I went from shaft beyond parallel with a wedge to 45 degrees with wedge to parallel with driver.  Feeling how to turn correctly on plane and feel your right arm work correctly, your body will respond by only being able to coil so much and the arms physically can't overswing if you're doing it right.

This ^^^ keeping your trail arm straighter, 90 degrees or less, will shorten the backswing.  Push with trail arm to "keep lead arm straight".
