Jones Classic Stand Bag?

Hello all,

 

In the market for a new bag and I'm all over the board.  I like the retro "simple" vibe of the Jones Original Carry, but really want a stand mechanism (dew, dirt, and general convenience of a stand).  I like the weight of the SM 2.5+ and Mizuno K1-L0, but don't love any of the colorways (and hear people talk about durability issues with them being so light weight).  The Hoofer and Hoofer lite seem like decent options, but aren't particularly light (btw, I'm that golfer who rides most of the time, but tells himself he's going to walk more 🙂  ... so I want the ability to walk with a light bag).

 

So I look at the pics and videos of the Classic Stand bag on Jones website and I like it: the look, the size, the stand.  Does anyone have any personal use reviews?  I hear lots of discussion of the Utility Trouper and Utility Trouper 2.0 (dual stap and balance are bad, cooler pocket seems to be a love it or hate it thing), but don't hear much on the Classic Stand.  Does anyone know if the 3-way divider is full-length or just the top?  How does it carry with the single strap?  Weight, balance?

I have no experience with the company or bag, but the price is in line with anything comparable you would get retail. I like the dual straps if I'm actually carrying, but they are a pain if you ride predominately. If it suits you, I say go for it.

I used the Classic Stand Bag in 2019 and 2020. Overall, played over 150 rounds with it. Here's my experience:

 

The vast majority of the time, I used it on my push cart. I probably carried it roughly 10% of those rounds. I only walk, so no experience with it in a golf cart.

 

Pros (for me):

Overall size: The reason I got this bag was because I was living at the time in a 3 floor walk-up, with very narrow staircases. This bag was a breeze getting up and down the stairs. Same goes for loading it in and out of the car. And, it sat the best of any bag I have owned on my push cart.

Durability: Decent amount rounds, no issues with zippers, no rips, no holes, etc.

Looks: I liked the old school look and minimal branding

 

Cons:

Side pockets: The side pockets are pretty much unusable. Very difficult to get items in and out of and not a great deal of space. Pain to have to use to even store a light jacket.

Weight: While small, this bag is not that light. Not compared to a Titleist Players 4 Carbon, Ping Hoofer Light or Sun Mountain 2.5. Yes, the dimensions are small, but materials used are not the lightest.

Lack of a Water Bottle Holder - No dedicated space for a water bottle

Carrying: I didn't like the Jones one-strap system for this bag. I don't mind it for some of the Jones carry bags, but it wasn't great for me on the stand bag. This partly why I didn't carry it more often and instead push so much.

 

Club Tangle: 

I know people have different sensitives to club tangle, so I didn't list it as a pro or a con. When I had the bag, I carried a full set, 14 clubs. There was some tangle, but it wasn't terrible. Frankly, I think pretty much all small bags have tangle, so I found the Jones acceptable. Others, may differ on this opinion. However, 14 clubs was tight. I would say that 12 is a better sweet spot for this bag.

 

Why I got rid of it:

Frankly, it wasn't a great carry bag. And, I wanted to start to carry more often than using my push car for every round. No place for water bottle, a little too heavy and did not like the one-strap. Also, I moved, so the issue with my old place and the staircases no longer existed. In the end, I moved on to a Titleist Players 4 Carbon this spring.

 

Overall, it is a good bag. However, it is not modern. Therefore, you will be sacrificing on functionality and weight. Hope this helps.

The Carbon has been excellent. Pretty much addressed every issue I had with the Jones. I would definitely recommend it.

I think Jones makes a good quality product but I didn't like the classic stand bag.  As mentioned above, the side pockets aren't very useful.  The bag is set up for left or right shoulder carry and has the same side pocket set up on each side.  Putting anything in the small side pocket that ends up against your back makes for an uncomfortable carrying experience.  The zippers alone occasionally digging into your back are bad enough.  The single strap is well padded but too slippery.  The balance of the bag while carrying is average at best.  I like the idea of a simple, compact, basic bag but this was a fail for me.  I switched to a Titleist Players 4 StaDry which as been excellent.  Other bags to consider are the Carbon or Craz-E Lite if you really think you will do some walking.  The Hoofer Lite is still the king of the carry bags in my opinion for quality, functionality, durability and comfort.

I'm a big Jones fan and I would personally go with the Utility stand bag over the Classic.

I, too, had balance issues with the bag you're considering. It was simply top heavy to the point occasionally clubs would nearly slip out. I am exclusively a walker and balance was a deal breaker for me.
