Maltby DBM

[Double Gee]

I know there's plenty of stuff on here about Maltby. 

I've seen the DBM irons always get great reviews but most of these positive comments are a few years old. 

 

So, are the DBM irons still good to buy and try? 

Is the design out-dated? 

 

I ask as finally I've found a fitter who supplies the UK trade. 

I did try the STi2 Irons before and hated them! 

 

Thoughts please.

I tried some a while back - they look amazing - loved the lack of offset but I found them to be very short and high launching

I concur with this.  I have a set of DBMs with True Temper Black Gold shafts, which are not high-launch shafts at all, and noticed a high ball flight and shorter distance.  But the dispersion was great.  🙂

They are a classic design to be sure, simple and clean appearance, they do have a low center of gravity compared to most non GI irons. The only caveat to playing them is they work best with a picker style swing. The sole does not have much camber or roll to it, unlike the STi2.

I have 4-GW DBM’s I keep as a backup set.  They are very easy to hit, look great at address, and feel better than most any other “game improvement” irons out there.  I’m a higher swing speed player and for me they tend to be about a club shorter (loft for loft) than anything else I play.  This is due to the combination of high launch and high spin that they create.  For someone with a more “average” swing speed, the DBM is tough to beat.

I can’t speak to the entire set but I play the GW one degree weak at 51* and it slots in perfectly between my set 46* PW and 56* SW. Just a different result than others it seems.

I bought a 6 iron to try out but I didn't have the swing speed for it.  While I found it was a club short in my case, the dispersion was tight and I was impressed how forgiving it was.  A 20 HC player could play them well if their swing speed is up there.
